93 or 95 Unleaded?

We don't get a choice on the coast. Do people in Pietermaritzburg get a choice of what type of fuel they can fill up?
 
93 is fine and you're car is heavy on petrol because it's a 1.4 and that 1.4 seemed flat. I had one for about two months when my car was being repaired and it was horrid.
I also think those small na cars actually use more then they should on the open road as you're pushing it harder to keep up.
Smaller engines seem to perform better in the city. When I drove my wife's Spark it was fantastic in city but on the highway it drank petrol. My Cruze is different
 
Engine capacity has little to do with what fuel you use, it is more the technology employed by the engine such as newer engines being turbocharged, direct injected, compression ratio, etc. Older engines like the 1.5l in my '82 Golf GLS is perfectly happy on 93 but the 2.0l turbocharged and direct injected engine in my '15 Golf R needs nothing less than 95, preferably 98. The same can be said for small modern engines using new technology like many 1.0l - 1.4l turbocharged engines in newer cars.

Any engine with a compression ratio above 10.5:1 should run 95 octane fuel

if you run lower octane you stand the risk of detonation, which could leave a nice big hole in your piston. The reason for this is that the higher the octane the cooler the explosion is that is why the octane increases when you go to the coast, because the atmospheric pressure increases, thus your compression ratio increases.

To summarise, running a high octane on any engine will not cause any damage, but running a low octane on a high compression engine can cause damage.

The Ford Fiesta 1.4 Ambienta's compression ratio is 9.8:1, so no need to fill up with 93.

At the reef, even 10.5:1 is fine with 93
 
My 1.4 fiesta has a sticker on the fuel cover saying minimum 95 unleaded. Later model though and not sure what the book says as minimum.
 
No downside to using 93 apart from it affecting your catalytic converter way down the line. Put in a Minicat when it gives you issues and you saved a pretty penny.

It will not affect your cat.

fuel cap on mine says 98 unleaded.Dont have time for no engine knock/detonation :crylaugh:
 
dude 93 is used to wash engine parts.

So let me explain. The higher the octane the more difficult it is for the fuel to ignite on its own.

So hot spots on the cylinders, warm days , hot intake temps etc etc etc , will cause the fuel to pre ignite. Detonate to early. This can cause engine damage. So your cars ecu is clever and it learns. so to prevent detonation it will reduce performance, pull timing and increase fuel injected to help cool cylinders.

So you use more fuel when using 93 and have worse performance.

95 resists pre ignition , so your car needs less fuel to cool the cylinders, it can run more timing and in general give you more performance.

So you have a cleaner burning engine, running safe and efficient.

yip , run higher octane even on my daily.Not for performance but for safety purposes.Plus if i run octane booster i can easily flip between 1,1bar and 1.3bar boost for those ennoying gti's etc that you see roaming the streets :D
