9800GTX+ vs. GTX250

The 250 is slightly better. all the reviews are running the 1GB version, so hard to tell...

You wanna know why? :p;). Nvidia told all the card makers to ONLY give the overclocked and 1gig-2gig versions so that everyone can think "wow, that's great!" mean while the GTS250 is in fact a 9800gtx+ with lower power requirements, same performance, and is 9" and not 10.5" (like a 5cm difference).

I also think that the gts250 will be cheaper too :). ha ha, but other wise not much difference, just another re-badging

no worries :). but it seems as though Nvidia have a reason for yet another renaming scheme... The reason why they names the 9800gtx+ the gts250 was simply to void the confusions that have come about... they did do a little work with the gpu to make it "Different" to the 9800gtx+ but in essence it's the same gpu on a new pbc....

Now to the naming.... It seems people have taken a disliking to Nvidia's naming scheme, and with good reason. I mean, they released the 9800gt which IS simply a 8800gt with a new sticker on it, this did create confusion as most of the cards didn't even get the 55nm die shrink and as a result people started to scratch their heads... this is where the gts 240 comes in. Although at heart it is just a 9800gt with a mild overclock and lower power requirements, the key part is that the new naming scheme suggests that this card is a gts, thus will never perform as fast as a gtx and being a lower number then the gts 250, it's got less performance...

Now, this is where the gts 250 comes in. Basically, people were just as confused with the 9800gtx/8800gts/9800gtx+ issue as they were with the 9800gt/8800gt issue... Basically, if you were looking at a 9800gtx a 8800gts and a 9800gtx+ and you looked at specs, you'd be thinking "Just wtf is going on here, they the same card, only the one is on steroids and costs more..." As a result, people(these are the uninformed folk) felt it was safer going with AMD as they have clear performance and numbers(or at least this is what Nvidia is thinking as it can't be that AMD is beating them ;) ). So, that's where the name gts comes in, they basically took the 55nm 9800gtx+, cut a good 6-7cm's off the board and then fiddles around to make the power consumption a little more eskom friendly... Since this card is faster then the gts 240, the number is higher, so they called it the gts 250... simple enough...

So in effect, Nvidia has renamed everything, so that things look a little more understandable for the consumers, and It's to my understanding that they starting with the gts 230(aka 9600gt) then they going to the gts 240(aka 9800gt+overclock) then the gts 250(9800gtx+ with it's a$$ cut off) then the gtx 260 then the gtx 280 then the gtx 285(hmmm, i smell trouble here, seems like nvidia might be getting fooled by there own simply naming scheme, in other words, this is a gtx 280 + overclock) then the gtx 295 (this is like the love child of the gtx 260 and gtx 280 only the love child is twins, it's got the gtx 260's clocks and mem while is has the gtx 280's shader units mix this all together and multiply by two). As simple as this concept is/was Nvidia has seemed to have made it just that little extra bit more difficult to understand

So, there you go, the summary of why Nvidia changed the name of things again... The funny part is that they lowered power consumption, overclocked the 9800gt a bit and cut off pieces of the 9800gtx+'s board and it's a job well done :). I applaud Nvidia for being the laziest company on earth, hell, I bet Porsche is blushing right now.

No, it was very informative, thank you! It makes a lot of sense (although somewhat opinionated). :)

I don't have much to discuss, I just want to know which one is better, lol.

Ya like the guys have said, you want the 1GB version (2GB is mostly a gimmick, the improvements over 1GB are going to be few and far between and specific to perhaps a handful of games) , the 512mb version of both cards are going to be too similar, though a slight edge for the 250.

Regardless that it's a re-spin of g92, the 1GB at a good price will be a very good "bang for buck" card!

So someone who has a Geforce4 card almost has a GTS250:D

Ok YOU're stretching it beyond logical reasoning just so you can joke around and post ur roLLy eyez, but he was essentially right, he forgot that 8800gt - 8800gts 512mb - 9800gt - 9800gtx - 9800gtx+ - GTX250.

I'd stick with a volt-modded, heavily OC'd 8800gt with good 3rd party cooling before I'd buy the 250 512mb, ..the 1GB is a different story, and is a good value if found at a good price..
