9800GX2 SLi question

That is rather confusing, here's what i did. I have made 1x8pin adapter, it goes from 2 molex to 1x6pin adapter and then i have attached another 2 pins to the 6 pin end by cutting the 2 pins off an old psu's mobo power cable. I used the adapter with the Gigabyte psu and the card did not output to screen but the lights were green, i then swapped the gigabyte with a generic 400w and used the same adapter again and everything is working just fine (i hope i did not confuse you now) :)

Not at all...my question is this...what did you connect the 2 molex connectors(that are connected to your modified 8 pin connector) to with the Gigabyte PSU and with the Generic PSU? So does the card connect to the PSU with one/two cables?

Ok, i'm going to have to get a new psu, its not gaming/benchmarking stable with the 400w generic, but atleast it works

For the gigabyte and the generic?

Thats so weird. Why can a 400W generic POS:) handle what your 585W gigabyte odin could not?

yes, for the gigabyte and the generic.

Not sure why it can't handle it. But anyway, i'll just keep the Gigabyte as a spare psu

Yep, i'll have to lay off the gaming for a month or so.

With sli disabled i was able to play crysis for half an hour before the pc shut down

have you got your card up and running yet?

The 585watt gigabyte isn't a real 585watt psu. 585 is only the peak rating. It's actually closer to a 500watt. You shouldn't skimp on the power supply.

Surely 500w is better than the 400w right?

So it makes very little sense to me in all honesty, that odin shouls handle it fine i reckon. Damn my antec 550w handles my entire system just fine.

Ya...was thinking the same thing.:erm:

Oki, i got another problem with my setup, i have the Gigabyte psu powering my whole rig except the gpu, so i assigned the 400W generic to power the gpu only. Now the problem i am having is that whenever i get to a point in Crysis where it has to render the water the blue light on the gpu goes off and the monitor goes into sleep mode but the pc is still on. When this happens though i hear the sound from the game going through an endless loop.

the same thing happens when i run 3dmark vantage, when i run the 1st graphics test everything is fine for about a minute then the gpu starts acting up. It passes the second graphics test though

When i run any 3d application i also hear this noise coming from the gpu that sounds kind of like a hdd going on and off (and no, its not the hdd because it only happens when i do something that involves 3d)

i have also tried increasing pcie voltage and also the pcie frequency but it does not help

i'm sure this ain't a psu problem because if it were, wouldn't the pc just switch off/reboot?

-edit-
just tried running the Passmark 3d test and it failed (the program came up with an error code " the 3d test was interrupted or there was an error during the rendering of the 3d scene. Error Number 5" when trying to do the dx10 test.)

Maybe it is that cable you made? May not be supplying the required power or something.

Also what drivers are you using? with my 9800gx2 when both lights are green it means the card is good to go, sounds funny it's giving you trouble.

What version are you on..? I see 186 is out.

perhaps the adapter can't handle the power being fed to the gpu by the psu? Just a guess. Awesome card! What happened to the 4870? :-) bet that would've booted without problems. Hehe

i'm hoping it's a power supply problem and not a gpu problem

the 4870 1GB toxic disappeared from PC internationals pricelist and so it was then between this card or a XFX GTX260 from PC International. So i went with this card :)

Hope you can get it working soon. Nothing more frustrating than getting a new piece of hardware and it doesn't work.

Silver dude as cfv says it could be the adapter, i would suggest taking it into esquire and getting them to test it, if you don't come right.

Go into esquire surely they have the right adapters as well.
