A client wants to upgrade his Acer Travelmate 5740G’s RAM. It has a Core i3 CPU M 330 @2.13GZ (Duel Core) and one 2GB Samsung RAM stick - PC3-10700 (667MHz), M471B5673FH0-CH9, @1.5V.

Laptop is running Win 7 SP1 32-bit.

According to the manual, it uses DDR3 1066MHz RAM.

I was thinking of getting one Patriot Signature Line, 4GB, DDR3-1333, CL9, SO-DIMM, (DDR3-1333 (PC3-10600), CL9, 1.5v, 204pin) from rebeltech.

Will this work if I install a PC3-10600 CL9 (1333MHz) RAM stick in the place of the 2GB PC3-10700 (667MHz) CH9?

From what I read (many years ago), the PC can adjust the RAM to run at the correct speed - this would only be the case if the RAM has a higher clock.

Does the laptop have a RAM compatibility list on the Acer site? I guess even if it did, it would be really out-dated.

Should work afaik as they are both ddr3 and the voltage matches.

Since it will clock down to lowest speed is suggest going for the cheapest stuff you can find.

Are you sure it's not cheaper add a second 667 2 gig stick or a 800 one? Think the outcome will be similar preformance wise (unless you mess with the cpu) but might cost less. Not sure though... RAM process are funky at certain combinations of specs so check out all options.

I am thinking to just put in a Corsair CMSO2GX3M1A1333C9 Value Select 2GB DDR3-1333 @R355 excl shipping from Wootware.

2GB PC3-10700 (667MHz) implies that its DDR3 1333MHz. DDR stands for double data rate -> 667MHz * 2 =~ 1333MHz.
So installing another 1333MHz 1.5V CL9 module would do just fine.

Please take note that because you have 32-bit Windows 7, your Windows won't allow you to utilize more than ~ 3.5GB of RAM.

I know about the 3.5GB thing of 32-bit OS, I just want the best compatibility and not waste money trying to help the client.

This one is single rank organisation. Yours - dual rank.
It should work, but is better if you match ranks.
