Im looking to upgrade my graphics card, and was looking at the prices of the latest graphics cards. The thing that confuses me is why is a Geforce GTX 285 going for basically the same price as GTX 480. A GTX 470 is even CHEAPER.

Prices:
GTX 285 R5067.14 : http://www.prophecy.co.za/asus-nvidia-geforce-ddr3-512bit-pcie-p-34666.html
GTX 470 R3755.16 : http://www.prophecy.co.za/zt4020110p-p-68270.html
GTX 480 R5411.12 : http://www.prophecy.co.za/zt4020110p-p-68271.html

My second question, is which graphics card would you recommend for a budget of R5000+- for a graphics card that is high performance and would last me. From what I have gathered it seems that a Geforce GTX 470 is ideal or the GTX 480 if you can afford it. Wondering if you guys agree or disagree.

Thanks.

ATI HD5870 maybe?

+1

The GTX's just consume to much power and generate way to much heat IMO.
But if that's not an issue then either one you'll be happy i think the 5870 just pips the 470 performance wise..
But the 470 smashes the 5870 in DX11.. So maybe with the future driver releases you'll see the 470 out perform the 5870. And since games are DX11 now i'd get the 470.. Seems more future proof

Thanks everyone, I think I might just get the GTX 480 for longevity. Anyone have a clue with the whole GTX 285 costing more than GTX 470?

GTX480 for longevity? As soon as we hit summer your card will be cooking around 105 degrees and will need to throttle itself to stay alive. Unless you plan on a non reference cooler, water cooling or have an aircon pointed at your machine I just cant recommend a GTX480 in SA.
The 5870 is a very good card and would be my recommendation. Its basically on par with a GTX470, sometimes the 470 wins, sometimes the 5870 wins. The added benefit over the 470 is eyefinity, lower power, and lower noise.

Edit: the 285 probably costs more since it was EOL'd last year sometime already. Though you'd think that retailers would drop the price in a clearance sale type effort

Prices have been adjusted at most suppliers to reflect the price/performance hierarchy. It is perhaps only retailers with stock that have not changed theirs...

What happens when top end gpu's get replaced the prices just sit there unedited for years sometimes. You can find 7900's for r4000 if you look around.

I've still got my 7900GT :) although it's in my sis pc now :)

I still dont see how you justify spending over 3k on a card.. it's just
Like you really dont look at longevity for cards, since the requirements and new tech is forever increasing!! I'd rather spend 2k every 2years on an ok card which plays the games decently than 5k for 4years or whatever the case maybe..

I understand if you got Huge res monitors or need that power for rendering etc.. But for me it's just over the top :)

/shrug

Do as you like. It's your money. If you feel that you need r3000+ worth of graphics card then spend it.

In any case you'd pay well over r3000 for a brand new gaming console that was already technologically obsolete by the time it was released.
