A Discussion With Iburst Management re P2P

This P2P priotirisation is the biggest sack of **** ever. Just got back from a friends house, ADSL 512 Capped, his P2P, Torrents were running at a stable 52KB/s - not fair! :( Last month he pulled thru 25GB. Seems to me that WBS don't wanna pay for bandwidth. By making local uncapped, we all know we can rape local torrent sites. Guess they wanna keep their costs low.. As we have all heard this before many times: What we do with our paid for 3GB is up to us. Like noone said, if he wants to blow R32k on bandwidth - thats HIS pluk, he has all the right to do so. another thing.. we getting ripped of for our bandwidth! Buddy pays R250 for 3GB. us? R400??

I cannot believe you guys and your "manifesto"

It all amounts to the fact that you want to download pirated material !

Your now up **** creek without a paddle and with a hole in your boat on that one.

Time and time again, I've seen the iBurst users talking about their ability to download warez !

WBS now has very accurate network usage alogorithms based on all the warez you guys have obviously downloaded.

It's quite funny, really - I'm way amused by it all !

:D

bb_matt I hope that post was just an attempt to stir **** and not your real thoughts on the matter.

If you are really concerned about people downloading warez could i point out that a lot of "people in the know" dont even bother with p2p but have http / ftp access to warez sites. So using your theory should we block http and ftp as well.

I had one gripe with iburst over prelaunch phase and that was that i paid for my WoW game but could not use it specifically when i wanted too because blizzard had released a patch which initially was only available on p2p. It was a small gripe as within 24hrs the patch was hosted on game sites and was a simple download, but nevertheless it was an inconvience.

If iburst are shaping p2p because they deem it a threat to their network integrity, then we have to argue with them the demerits of that.

If as you propose certain protocols should be blocked because they could potentially (and probably) break certain laws then we had better shut down the entire internet as every protocol has the same potential. We could then start on the telcoms sector as i am sure that cell phones are used every day by criminals.

Prehaps we should just block all communication between people??

look as everyone knows I dont download too many whole some things, so I know a thing or two about p2p apps and am all for them, hopwever when p2p usage is so high it starts infringing on other users' experience, then yes, I say shape it.

The thing is the 9GB p2p package is exactly what we asked for, we said we want flexability and a package for p2p users who like to rape bandwith, so called power users, and they gave it. If however you want to remain on the standard 3GB package then your stuff will be shaped, but to be honest thats what they have been telling us all along, infact when this thing started they were going to throttle everythign but HTTP, POP3 and FTP to 64kbit, but now they have at least shown flexibility, they no longer port shape and just shape p2p packets, thats not bad if you ask me.

The shaping hasn't been completly relaxed but it will be (probably even next week), for the standard packages and it will stay relaxed untill such time as your bandwith needs infringe on your neighbours access. I think you must be high to try talk to management about your consumption of compyrighted content for free.

yepp, its all about thier profits, I thought they were going for low markup with a high amount of users but they seem to have gone for High markup with a low amount of customers. One thing WBS still has is felxibility, of course we do need to moan and kick our feet, scream and shout to get them to move an inch, but its still more than Telkom would do. I hope they can be profitable and give us what we want, because no other broadband provider in SA to date has been able to do both.

re anthony's phone number - I figure just call the central main IBurst number and ask to be put through :) (Some happy yellow-arm-stirrers have sent me his email addy, but why clog his inbox, or give him the ability to simply hit 'delete' - much more fun to confront him with a real live customer on the phone that he has to deal with.
I'd imagine if this starts happening a few times a day or more, and starts interfering with his ability to do his job, he may come to understand that this is something we customers want to have addressed by IBurst.. :)

Re the 'small customers - high markup' thing.
That's easily destroyed. All we have to do is NOT buy more bandwidth, and sit back and contentedly chug away on the 64k connections.

As the months go by with hardly anyone 'buying more bandwidth' - this'll probably mess their financial projections completely, and force them to re-evaluate their entire package system.

They might even suddenly get verrry friendly and start asking us what WE want, as opposed to what THEY have decided to give us..

there is no way i will sit back on 64k for a month, thats just cutting off my nose to spite my face

you could still pull around 18 gig on a 64k line (running at 90% bandwidth) 24/7 and 31 days in a month.

Add your 3 gig on there, and you'll get 21 gig.

ADSL users, however, pull around 130gig nevertheless because their local is uncapped...

Yep - totally unusable.

One interesting thing though, you can buy another 3gig account for average R250 - quite a bit cheaper than what iBurst are charging.

Listen here, i dont download any pirated software . I am not english 1st language speaking and need to download tv shows etc in our native language from P2P so my family doesnt go insane! We dont keep it , it is watched and deleted so shove your "high and mighty" attitude!

Keep laughing ........
um that is still piracy

slimothy, actually it's not, if you sell it. it becomes piracy, downloading tv shows is just the same as recording them on your vcr to watch them later, the reason why you may think it's piracy is because major networks produce, and then syndacate the show to smaller stations, who pays it to syndicate it. But, there's nothing wrong with taping it and watching it later (or sharing with friends)

So long as you dont charge your friends...

you guys tend to talk the biggest pile of **** ever with regards 2 piracy.

If you dont pay for something and download it, it is theft! END OF STORY. If you want WBS to support your quest with p2p and THEFT do you think they are going to budge?

ISP's in other countries are cracking down on p2p. There is a court case in USA about p2p. No ISP on earth is going to succumb to 10 or 20 or even 40 users demanding p2p... when they already offer it on a high end package.

You few are a drop in the ocean of potential customers... so be realistic and rather fight for unshaped bandwidth and STOP using the term p2p becsue you are stupid to think 90% of the stuff on p2p is not STOLEN, CRACKED, RIPPED.

Very logical point noone - I mean, all of us have taped stuff on VCR and loaned it to friends. Now we just burn onto CD or DVD and share with buddies.

The big difference now of course is the people who share stuff online - it's all very well sharing with say, 3 or 4 buddies, but putting a file online to share means it can be accessed by thousands of people.

It's kinda like setting up a stall at the flea market and giving away movies to anyone that passes by.

In SA were kinda at the tail end of the whole movie downloading scene, thanks to our bloody rotten bandwidth and restrictive caps - but imagine what Asia and the USA are like, where you can download a DivX TV episode in like 10 minutes - even faster in some cases.

It's no wonder TV and Movie producers are up in arms - but, as usual, instead of trying to embrace the technology and find new ways to distribute content, they try to squash it instead.

I'd pay R15 a TV episode or Movie from a legal source, no problem - you'd then be guaranteed that the quality will be good. Of course, they'll never stop piracy outright and people would pay for those TV episodes and then share them on the net for free as usual, but at least it would give people a legal and safe way to download and watch TV shows and movies.

Still, not much point of pondering on that in this country, with our rather pathetic 3gig CAPs ! :(

Hi Noone (really living up to your name arent you?!)

You can use a gun to kill someone or you can use them for self defense. Now being FREE I can still buy a gun, but only get in trouble if I use it wrong, you cannot decide that for me.

As I said to you not all P2P is piracy so go think about it for a while. Ranting about us talking **** and then backing it up with that pile of horse **** is not productive.

The "other" countries are not stopping P2P but torrent sites may be asked for users IP addresses (by court order) should the COPYRIGHT HOLDERS (by the way, it only becomes PIRACY if you break a copyright existing in your country) want to press charges. this is the court case you are talking about, and lets see how far that goes in Constitutional Court, my bet is on NOWHERE.

So it has nothing to do with P2P service itself and please come with something a little more substantial than your previous post.

you guys are idiots, OK yes piracy may be contrude to be selling the copyrighted material however just downloading it is illegal, so wether you consider this piracy has no relavence, the fact is its illegal and we are just arguing symantics.

Telivision shows have become the new target for MPAA who's member companies (the film studios) do make telivision shows (Warener Bros, Paramount), the difference with TV shows is they are ussually not sold, but it hasn't stopped them prosecuting people distrubuting the shows. The biggest consumer of American shows on the internet are the British and I can find 4 cases since Febuary that have resulted in prosecution. So it is illegal, and is illegal in our country, thats all you need to worry about. I dont care if you break the law and in a violent country liek ours the crime seems so petty it's stupid but if enough people here downloaded shows we would definatly have at least one prosecution. Although we do have a tiny internet community and even tinier broadband community so I really dont think the MPAA would waste thier time.

Peer-to-peer went to toe-to-toe with the entertainment industry as the file-sharing battle played out in front of the issue's most important audience, the United States Supreme Court.

Perhaps you should educate yourself a little before 'claiming' that someone is talking horsesh1t. You and I might not think there is anything wrong with p2p but the commercial world certainly does and guess what. WBS belong to that commercial world.

MPAA = Motion picture association of america

The last i checked this was South Africa.

Any other questions?

I know we are debating p2p here - but what about the millions of people copying dvd's and cd's. All the same.
