So mine is in the post. Just a simple question really, but I struggle to find an up to date answer.

I assume you're using a card reader with the Camera Connection Kit - does that work directly or do you need a powered USB hub?

Anyway, what I want to know is there is a way to import files, write metadata to them, and export them back onto the card? Or better yet, not import them at all, but update them in place?

Photosmith seems perfect for what I need, but the emphasis is not so much on exporting, but rather syncing with Lightroom. For most days, that's OK, but I'm about to travel for five weeks, and 64GB just might not be enough :D

If you're a Mac user iPhoto is pretty good, the iPad app and desktop app work well together I've heard.

Certain card readers work with the cck but not all/most of them. If yours doesn't you'll need to use the USB cable adapter and take them directly off the camera.

There's no way that I'm aware of to export back to the card.

If using a card reader you should be able to place files back onto a card. Canon cameras (don't know about other brands) simply don't allow writing to the card via the usb cable connection method, but there's nothing the camera can do to stop you once you relieve the card from its evil clutches.

There's no way I know of to export images via the CCK to a SD/CF card to an iPad, but I could be mistaken.

Grrrr, two week delivery time - I've had to cancel that and hope to find one in a store, but no luck so far. Now to decide: suck it up and buy the big one, or do without it? The 64GB (New) iPad costs a pretty penny :(

I have, and it will be cheaper than in the UK. But I'm not going to the cities - no apple stores where I'm going :)

Actually, I just checked. There are no Apple Retail shops where I'm headed - only localised apple.com sites, with the same 2-4 week delivery time that we have here in the UK. Oh well...

Reserve one with dixons at the airport?

Out of stock. I've checked every 3rd party retailler - they're all out of stock. Most of them haven't even received any stock yet, they're just listing it hoping to get orders.

I've been chatting to a colleague who used to work at one of the apple stores. He says the 3rd parties won't have stock for a while - just the way it works :/

Bidorbuy, with a premium, that being said I know someone who got one for 1k discount the other day..

Are you looking for the mini or the maxiPad?

So, I got it, finally. iPad Mini 64GB. What a nice device! I bought one of these. It doesn't work. I don't know if it's simply because I need to use the 30-pin to linghtning adaptor - who knows. I also bought the Lightning to USB camera adapter. It works great when connecting the camera, but when plugging in my card reader, the iPad complains about it drawing too much power. It's very unlikely that I'll manage to fit a powered USB hub into my luggage, but it's ok if it can pull them straight off the camera.

So, on to the software:

iPhoto: I tried it, it's nice, it does what I need. Bizarrely, even though it allows me to keyword images, when I import it into either iPhoto or Aperture on the Mac, the keywords don't come along. I don't see any settings that should impact this, so I'm not sure why this is the case. It seems like it might only use it when exporting.

bwana, are you able to get this working with any of the software you use?

Try pulling the images off with Image Capture. I key worded images with Photogene and iPhoto and they both worked.

EDIT - I see it also works with Aperture. Just to be clear you are exporting your edited photos back to the camera roll when you're done with the keywording, right?

Aah, I think you're on to something. I'll check that and report back.

As a side note, I did finally give up last night (or rather, early this morning) and buy photosmith. It's pretty nice, and the syncing works very very well!
