Ok lets get started, first of; What is the difference between registered memory and buffered memory?

Secondly; I'm not a ADSL member of telkom any more thanks to their brialliant service so I would like to know what would be a better option if I went to a wireless internet axxess if anyone has any past experiences?

Thirdly When some thing blows on ur MB either the cpu or the mb which hardware is it that normaly fails the most

Fourtly off topic; are we allowd to advertise on the myadsl forums? (like if you wan't to sell a pc or somthing?)

Thanks

Sentech MyWireless classic is the best broadband option.
Not sure about the rest, sorry

1) http://www.neoseeker.com/Hardware/faqs/kb/11,20.html . If you're not running a mission critical server then standard memory is more than adequate.

3) The CPU is the least likely component to fail (unless you're overclocking the hell out of it). The memory or video card would be the first two items to check if the computer is not booting at all. If both of those are fine then the motherboard is the likely culprit.

4) It's generally ok as long as you're not advertising commercially (in which case you'll need to purchase a banner ad).

1. Registered / ECC memory is used more in server environments as it has it's own error checking & correction algorithms. For a quick definition see here

2. I still don't think there's any wireless providers that can compete with ADSL, as horrible as the service is :(

3. I agree with Perdition, mostly MB / RAM, then GFX, then HDD/Other Peripherals. CPUs are prob the most reliable, unless it's an old piece of junk AMD K6-II (Me has nothing but bad memories of those)

4. Wanna buy a PC, just PM me :p teeeheehee ;)

so unbuffered memory is for dektop uses? maybe that way my pc restarting the whole time becuase of the registered memory?

ummm dude you just got rid of the better option

i cannot believe you didnt keep your adsl line

go with iburst for shocking reception or for some ppl its really good
ummm 2800 for modem

sentech hmmm load of crap also expensive modem

so phone telkom back before they give your port away

huh? u talking to me killadoob?

I'm have to much tech difficulties wif telkom

So be it...

yea i was talkin to you :)

you think you have problems with adsl lol

wait till you get sentech or iburst
aint gonna be gettin better

no gaming no p2p and they expensive

but tis your choice

Hmm, leave it to NightWulfe to possibly sink his teeth into this can of worms...

1) Registered memory is absolute overkill unless you're running a critical server.
2) A client of mine decided to go for iBurst (1024Kbps claimed) and managed to get a download rate of 4k/s in the North of Joburg. To put it in perspective, my TELKOM DSL192 manages about 35~45k/s on a good day, perhaps 20k/s on a bad one...
3) Motherboards I think have a bug built into them that makes them self-destruct at critical times of need. Never speak with your case open, it may pull a HAL stunt. "Hello Dave..." (bum bum buuuum) I personally find the ASUS or ECS boards to be the most reliable, GB used to be, but they're not doing so hot, and EPoX is bound to pull a "Stealth" maneuvre on you.
4) On the topic of bad hardware, never buy a Fujitsu hard drive, if you have an MPG series, use it as a paperweight now before you have no choice.
5) Haven't you already tried to advertise and got a snotty response?
6) Easiest way to see if your MoBo is giving grief, look at the capacitors (the cylindrical efforts all over the board), if their tops are flat, or have indents inwards (normally in the shape of X or K), they're fine. If any of them have bubbled, you can try your luck with a soldering iron or just buy a new board. Just don't push on any bubbled ones, you could lose your eyes if they're electrolytic.
7) In order to avoid tech difficulties with Telkom, don't go and use their supplied router. I won't even say do yourself a favour, its more like common logic to me, but get yourself a NetGear, Planet or Linksys router and be done with it. Oh, and there is a reason why none of the letters U, S, or B are used in the term, A, D, S and L. Will leave everyone to work that out...

Consider the can punctured...

Ok, never mind a can of worms, I'm going to concede stupidity and blame lack of sleep on the latter part of point 7, in an effort to preserve some alphabetical self respect before someone else points it out...

To think, that post was going so well...
