A Final Call For iBurst

As I said many times, we need to get some stuff in place first. That's now mostly done, so I'm putting the final touches on a few spreadsheets I've been working with. ;)

I have stuff, its in my wallet, untill it debits to you, and it seems to get me very little :D

Maybe you should have different packages for different needs;

A slower connected speed (not 64k!) more like the equivalent of a Do1, with a huge cap for those who want to download and dont need to stream or voip etc.

A normal burst account for the normal surfer type of person for voip, media streaming etc.

A super account (probably like 1.5k p/m) for a combination of both.

Who gets 200gig a month on a throttled service anyways??? I doubt it... jee - I theoretically work out that at full speed 300gig per month (and thats 24/7 full speed). We dont want to be unreasonable, give us a 20+gig cap to start with. Just remember that if Neotel improves (and I mean considerably - which I am sure they will), you get uncapped at faster speeds for R999 !!! And that is an apples with apples comparrison!

Hi Jannie,

I trust you will have some nice very transparent packages as well:

showing

  • Monthly Modem Cost
  • First GB Access Cost
  • Topup GB cost

I trust you will be competitive with the new developments on the horizon.

A quick question: What percentage of users actually use the mobility aspect of iBurst wireless?

Can somebody check my figures here please?

Best I can tell is that DigiChillii will cost:

R131 Compulsory Analogue Line Rental (/spit on Telkom for extorting that from us)
R245 384 ADSL rental of R245
R500 256+ DigiChilli connection, uncapped and evidently pretty much unshaped, other than p2p / torrents,

for a total of R876 a month? Which excludes instalation fees, which are pretty nasty from what I see.

Contrast that to R200 a month for 1gb @ 1Mbps, followed by a frequently unreliable and not-even-close-to-64Kbps throttled connection.

The DigiChilli is a lot more to be sure, but it also looks like you'll get a lot more for that money. Especially given you can run 2x256k connections at the same time for that price, as I understand it?

I'm happy to stay with iBurst, and to even pay more than I do currently, for something comparable. But best we hear something concrete very soon regarding a product in the R500 - 700 range that offers comparable uncapped speeds or iBurst is likely going to haemorrhage subscribers.

Myself for one.

Choose the "Closer 1" package at 145.00 per month then you pay zero voice line installation costs. (PS have a look at the other 'Closer plans and what benefits they offer)
You can change back to normal line rental afterward if you want with no penalty.

R245 384 ADSL rental of R245

Choose DoBroadBand Level 1 which gives you a 384 kbps line with 1GB of International data and 10GB of local data at R 199.00 per month.

Choose the 'self install' option when you request the service and you pay zero installation fees.

See my comments above on how you can get to pay zero installation fees for both voice and adsl line.

A quick question: What percentage of users actually use the mobility aspect of iBurst wireless?

Before I landed my study contract with work and started attending university full time, I'd frequently take my modem & laptop into the office to browse forums / play WoW / chat on IM / etc on the quiet days.

That was two years ago now, and frankly, currently for those days I need to have a mobile connection, the laptop & 3g package I'm looking to get from Vodacom later today looks to be plenty sufficient for my needs.

So in short, iburst mobility, limited as it is by coverage, is not much of an inducement to remain with the service in the face of increasingly more cost effective fixed line offerings.
Particularly when weighed against the bad will generated by things like what can only be described as willfully not informing customers when cheaper & more cost effective packages were released, and continuing to charge them the older significantly more expensive tarrifs.
Enabling out of bundle by default, and not making it very clear that this was the case - I wonder how many people received horrific bills because of that? Add a confimation dialogue or something please, just a little thing to say "Yes, I''m sure I'm happy with paying the extra money" rather than the rather small "Click me if you want to opt out" that I recall.
The frequently unreliable and unstable connection which doesn't deliver what is advertised.
And don't even get me started on the lack of satisfaction obtained from calls to the "help" desk. The 20 point checklist to answer customer queries the staff evidently use where every item on it is "Buy more cap at grossly inflated prices, that'll solve your problem sir, even though I understand clearly that you're telling me the tower is offline and that you cannot connect to the service at all / your modem is dead / we have billed you double this month / facebook won't load / you can't log into our system to buy more cap / etc".

Now, this is a pretty negative post I'll admit. And in general, I'm happy that I get what I pay for with iBurst, particularly in the context of how much the alternatives cost, and how a number of them are no better at all (hello Neotell, that's you I'm talking to).
But to think that there isn't room for improvement, significant and long overdue improvement would be a mistake.

To end on a suggestion, a positive contribution I hope - Jannie, why not give us a little infomation about what your plans are, please?
By all means, put it in big bold red letters that things are subject to change & so on, we can all understand an appreciate that I'm sure, but give us at least a rough idea of what you're thinking and what we can expect in terms of future offferings.

Because that DigiChilli is looking very attractive right now, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in needing a little more than

to prevent me from changing service providers.

Thanks Gecko, that pretty much matches what I thought it would cost, but you'll save me a bundle on installation fees if I decide to make the jump :)

PS - If you do decide to go with anyone try and avoid contracts.
Telkom offers various payment options including Debit orders, EFT's, Pay at your local checkers etc. etc.
ADSL routers are cheap and the package deals offered by various ISP's are getting better all the time.

Do not lock yourself in.

My Telkom bill breaks down:

R114.91 - Telephone line
R133.33 - 384 ADSL line

Those are the only Telkom costs I pay. So your figure should be R750 odd, not R850 odd.

Exactly why I said in the region of around R700

and Jannie, just because Telkom rip us off with a fake extra cost of R114 for the Telephone Line DOES NOT MEAN YOU SUDDENLY HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO IT TOO

but alas, charge your fake telkom phone line charge, it comes down to R750 for ADSL Uncapped - whatcha gonna do?

One must also factor in that things are happening in ADSL space. R500 uncapped today from DigiChilli today can easily be surpassed by another provider within the next month. To be able to take advantage of these changes one needs to be on ADSL. I give iBurst change till the end of December - if nothing happens I am ordering a telephone line first thing January. 64k is really to slow now.

Well here you go Digichilli just got surpassed and I-Burst are still silent. Jannie, if you guys don't introduce new products by December you will start losing serious chunks of individual business now and not later. How I wish I could be released from my d@mn contract today:

"Screamer Telecommunications today announced its entrance into the ADSL market with a full ADSL product range which includes an unlimited 384kbps service for R399 per month."

That does look like a nice deal. With my iburst contract ending next month i might actually look into that and some of the other adsl deals floating around.

I just checked Screamer's Wi-Max prices and lol, they have an uncapped wireless (no Telkom fees at all) from like R299 per month, UNCAPPED boys and girls. Now that's comparing apples to apples Jannie and don't say that I-Burst provides 1 Mb connection speed, so do they and I have never seen a 1 Mb connection with I-Burst, 512 Kb at most....

I-Burst are now OFFICIALLY a rip off and they can't fall back and say that you're paying for the good service because they don't even know what that is!

Oh Jannie.... Now the pie hits the fan!!! I think you guys are going to have to push a new product offering super fast now!!!

+1, if by December Iburst hasn't offered something competitive, I'm ditching them too. My patience is nearly out...

I actually think we should private message Shaun and the I-Burst gang so we can get an official comment on this, I am no longer going to tolerate their silence when it is obvious that we are being taken for a ride as consumers!

The last "official" comment was that Jannie was looking at it at present, and he looked shocked at the R700 for uncapped comment somewhere in this thread! hmmm

Here's what I suggest, Leave the price on the 5gig package as is, but throttle to 384 when cap is reached... Yeah! That would be cool! Or just make it uncapped - 384 all the time!

I was 1 week away from signing up another account with Iburst... wanted the dual setup. To be honest with the new ADSL packages coming out I am afraid Jannie and co you guys are just outright losing me as a client new year April. I started the new product ideas thread, you guys ignored it, another thread about change was launched, you guys ignored it, we are now on a third thread and you guys are still ignoring it. No more anger no more hate, I am simply going to vote with my wallet and bring my business to telkom. I almost shiver saying it but it looks like they are the way to go.
