I would say its the worst as you have to manage the waste for thousands of years, well if you read that link, Eskom don't even have a plan for the high level waste, it's just been sitting at Koeberg all this time.
Thanks, more fuel (pun unintended) for my argument against nuclear in SA - as I keep saying, ANC don't listen to rules or requirements.
 
32 tonnes a year is more than 2 tonnes a month, Koeberg is too small for that
According to Eskom, Koeberg generates approximately 500 drums of low-level waste, 150 drums of intermediate-level waste and 32 tonnes of high-level waste per year.

In the absence of reprocessing, the fuel pools at Koeberg, initially designed to allow the fuel to cool for approximately five years before being sent for reprocessing, have become the de facto storage space for all used fuel. Because of this, Eskom was forced to increase storage capacity in the pools (by reracking the fuel rods) in the late 1980s.

Despite this reracking, Eskom informed the ANC in 1994 that a dry-cask storage facility for Koeberg’s high-level waste should be built within four years. Cask storage involves moving fuel rods that have been sufficiently cooled in fuel pools into dry casks made from concrete and steel. These casks, which cost approximately $3 million each, are then stored either on a reinforced concrete pad or in a specially designed storage building. According to Eskom, waste can be stored in these casks for at least 40 years, but potentially up to 100 years. In the United States, the casks are licenced for a maximum of 60 years.

In 1994, while the ANC acknowledged the high-level waste problem needed to be addressed, it chose to ignore Eskom’s recommendation that a dry-cask storage facility be built as soon as possible. By 1996, Eskom was forced to further rerack high-level waste in Koeberg’s cooling pools.

A two-reactor pressure water reactor power station like Koeberg generates approximately 32 tons of spent fuel each year.

Its actually more than 32 tons of waste a year, as the low level waste isn't counted in that, and there is more of that.

I'm not going to waste my time as a thousand years is beyond our comprehension.
If you go to Witbank Mpumalanga, you will find the air is almost unbreathable, the water is not good and people are sick all the time. It has the worst air quality you can imagine. Why would you want more of that? The video clearly suggests not only the reuse of nuclear material but also proper long-term storage.

Also, the part about the ash in current power stations is also a source of radioactive contamination. This should not be overlooked at all. As you and I both know how it looks at Kendal, Duvha and Kriel not to mention the new plants. Not only is ash a big problem people are forced to work in it all day.

You can say Nuclear is bad all you want but from my perspective, it is the only true way forward. If not stand alone then in conjunction with renewable energy.

If you are not going to take the time to understand nuclear waste then you are just fear-mongering at this point. I take this topic very seriously and I have very intimate knowledge regarding power stations. There is a lot you don't know.

Radioactive equipment is used all the time in power stations. People factually died from exposure as well over the years. Make no mistake, you can't get away from radiation that easily.

With panels on the roof of a container , do they know how many square metres is need to charge a big batttery

Unfortubately south africa is all chief and way to little indians

Actually most of the high level waste you have to manage for a long time is marginal in comparison to the low level waste which is only radioactive for a short period.
Also the containers the HLW is in, can withstand a lot of damage and force. If the entire worlds high level waste can fill a football field, how much do you think Koeberg has generated?

That area is bad BUT it is not only due to the power stations. A big part of the problem is the underground coal seams that are on fire. And yes, it is long overdue that power plants meet the pollution specs. The technology to scrub out SO2 has been around for 50 years. Just not implemented.

I would not pair with renewables to be honest

That is the start of the problems
ie putting a certain amount of load on renewables means the difference between peak and day time gets bigger and nuclear doesn't ramp up and down easy

That is exactly why gas/oil companies help push the renewables , because they have to be supllemented/replaced with what they sell in peak time

I don't know set up a bitcoin mining network to help absorb some of the difference in off peak and switch it off at peak, to reduce the amount that has to be suplemented via dirty means

It is complicated. I worked with a lot of people and I don't want to get anyone in trouble so I just don't go into very high detail. But I handled all the paperwork of a lot of planned outages before my dismissal. Again I was no one special but the thing about capturing data is we get to read the stuff.

Yes, but it won't be like that for a thousand years if you turned it off tomorrow. Koeberg site is ****ed for a thousand years. There is also different types of radiation if you read that link, low medium and high.

The only way forward is to adapt. It's already too late to change the outcome, therefore we don't need nuclear.

I did watch the Scandinavian approach to waste storage so I don't know if that's what you were trying to show me, but all around the world, the containers only last 100 years out of thousand, and after 100 years, the ones in power would have long retired on their island.
