We had our iBurst modem swopped a few weeks by someone from sharedirect because ours stopped working. This evening we got disconnected and when we tried to reconnect it says our username/pw is invalid. So I called iBurst and my UTID seems to have been activated under some other person name/account today. iBurst says they can't help, it's a sharedirect problem.

How is this even possible??????

We have completely lost our service now...

And sharedirect isn't really available atm.

This stuff happens all the time with iBurst.

First my account was strangely canceled at my imaginary request a few weeks ago, then I received a R3000 bill for a modem which was funny since I bought my modem second hand off a guy on this very forum.

Ah iBurst, you remind me of Sentech in only the best (worst) ways.

Yes it's a tragedy that Jhbgirl's account is cut off, but seeing as there *is* another company/a reseller in the middle, they are technically correct in saying said reseller is at fault ...even tho' *they*, as the network (hardware) owners, are being particularly dumbass by not fixing it anyway and dealing with the reseller later. They've got a great system for tracking their UTx hardware, who's using them and where they go, so technically they're miles ahead of where Sentech ever got to; as usual, it's customer service angle that's lacking.

....and oh wow...it's working again...you know! I asked them if they weren't "working on something" before we even started...but no..all systems is up and running they said.

Will still need to get the UTID mess sorted out tmrw though.

*sigh*

Jhbgirl: sharedirect are your reseller as a result the could have the power to assign modems.
At these time of the night I don't see iBurst doing something for you and tomorrow they will refer you to Sharedirect.

I guess these apply to subscribers who are using Tradepage or Nashuabb.

bdt - i might have missed something in these world,
what system are they using to track those funny looking devices?

native, every UTx has 2 unique numbers and, that I've seen, iBurst keep absolute track of those. As an example, I can give you my UTC, but unless you have the user/pass assigned to it, it's useless to you; similarly my user/pass on your UTx doesn't work. On top of that, it's trivial for them to stop access with any given device by a simple accounting measure on their side.

bdt - thanks
I got the wrong end of the stick

I thought maybe they have developed a software whereby you can track a modem once stolen to view where it have been connecting to.
Past experience, iBurst helpdesk are notorious for giving info w/o proper security checks.

Well, that's not too difficult to do: it stands to reason that they would be able to see which tower a device is connecting to ..and, with the number of antennas they have on their base stations, from what angle. And if they kick that device off a coupla towers and make it look around, it becomes a trivial exercise to get lots of triangulation action happening - not that they'd be interested, of course.

Interesting, my connection got disconnected a couple of minutes ago, and now my authentication is also failing ... will give them a call quick and threaten to phone Shaun Green on his cell at this hour of the morning ... should hopefully get some reaction :D

I'm currently connected via MTN 3G. Looks like the whole Iburst network is down.

But of course, the Network Status Page says eveything is 100% OK.

I got disconnected too - not sure if it's auth failure, for some reason my router doesn't show anything in the logs.

Still down on iBurst ... hopping between timeouts and authentication failures

Took it off, plugged directly into my modem. Got:

pppd[7050]: No response to PAP authenticate-requests

After some time it connected again.

iBurst inaccessible

Last night I experienced the same loss of contact to iBurst as everyone else.

I could not ping www.iburst.co.za.

utTraceStar showed that all the base stations around me were functioning as usual. All base stations were on load 0 indicating that everyone normally connecting to my local base stations had been dropped.

All iBurst support numbers were engaged.

A call to 086 192 7435 a few minutes ago yielded no explanation whatsoever as to what the problem was.
