Hi

I need a little help with installing a wi-fi card and getting it setup. i have adsl at home (384) and want to share the connection via wi-fi as well. is that even possible ? basically i want to use the wi-fi on my phone to download apps etc but don't wanna use my sim to do it (wanna make use of the adsl via wi-fi)

i got the installation of the pci card right and installed the driver etc but don't know how to set up a wi-fi connection using my adsl ... i googled a few guides and tried it out but failed :( quite badly i might add.

anyways can anyone tell me or give a link to a step by step guide on how to set up such a connection ?
please it has to be user friendly and easy to understand. i understand better than most but will still like the easy version if possible :)

basically i want to use the wi-fi on my phones and laptop...the current adsl is connected to my desktop which i like to keep that way.

i'm on xp sp 3... the guide i followed previously was for sp2 but to be honest i didn't see or understand some of the buttons on my screen sometimes and winged it ... hence the epic fail and why i need a user friendly guide.

thanks

oh the wi-fi card is a generic one from matrix, well not quite generic but i can't remember the brand name right now. it's a dual wifi and bluetooth card with one antenna (100m range) if that helps ...

So your router does not have wireless?

What you want to do is share the internet (router connected to PC via network cable?) through the computers wireless card?

oops yeah forgot to mention my router isn't wireless which is why i bought the wi-fi card :)

the bold part is 100% correct ... is that possible ?

edit: i tried a guide i found on google and was partly succesfull, i setup a wireless connection from my desktop and called it xyz then i used my phone to search for wireless connections and found xyz ! problem was when i connected to xyz and then tried to browse a web page it said server not found on the phone... so obviously i didn't set it up correctly ... i since deleted all connections and wanted to start afresh with a new easier guide

There should be an option on the wireless connecttion on the PC that says something about sharing the internet with other devices i think. It will have to create a bridge connection on your PC.

my router is already on bridge mode and i have tried using that wizard to share internet connection using the guide i found, the guide had some screenshots and buttons i didn't see on my pc... thats where i got lost basically. i didn't enable the encryption either as i thought i would do it later and just set up the connection now but like i said the connection picks up but and i can connect to it via my phone but gives me a server not found error when i try to browse using the connection.

maybe i should just hire someone to do it for me ? just thought i try to save a few bucks by doing it myself :(

edit: thanks sharkbait will def try those before i give up ! :)

wow thats great of you to offer ! thanks.

will pm you if i decide to take you up on that, i'm gonna try one last time and see if i can crack it ... i feel horrible that a little old lady can do it and i can't :(

I used to share my internet connection running from a laptop that had embedded 3G by using a proxy like ccproxy ((http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/). Install the proxy server on the pc with the internet connection and then connect with whatever device (cellphone etc) to the proxy's ip address.

LoL.... It only means that she has a lot more experience in the IT field. I'm sure you are not working in the IT field...?

off topic - (sort off)
can a blackberry be configured as a wireless router?

Basically to need to create an ad hoc wi-fi connection between your PC and your mobile phone - once you get that right you'll need to
bridge the wifi connection and the ethernet connection that connects to your router. Set up your IP and default gateway on you phone if you don't have DHCP then you should be good to go.

Right click adsl connection, properties, share, choose wireless network. Untick all blocks, click ok.
Connect your phone, internet!
