A model CEO for the new SA

Agreed Ettubrute! I think most people will agree that Papi is a nice guy, but we are looking for better services at affordable rates. So far Papi has done less in that department (regarding ADSL) than Sizwe!
 
Interesting life. He seems to be doing to good job of positioning Telkom well for the future via contracts, infrastruture upgrades, etc. I would not like to be the person at the helm when the SNO comes in.

It will make for an interesting period to see how Telkom reacts, because not matter how much they have prepared, there will be things that will catch them off guard

How typical of Telkom. Just shows they don't want to give up their monopoly anytime soon.

What a load of crap this article is, he doesn't even mention the part where Papi bribed him at the end of the interview. I don't get this at all, reading this just disgusts me. Goddamn Telkom propaganda B/S!

i agree that it will be interesting to see how they react. however i dont think that they have prepared at all, they have managed to alienate everyone, and basically gave people reasons to downright hate them. a lot of people will move to the SNO simply out of hatred for telkom and nothing else. if telkom truely prepared for the SNO's entry, they wouldn't have cut their staff by half therefore reducing service levels. they also wouldn't have extorted as much as they could while they could. they had their chance, they stuffed up, and now they'll have to deal with it.

One tough chap ... no MBA sales idiot we are dealing with .... no wonder he fired the a$$es of those execs.

I fear for SNOT :D.

He doesn't want to make money anymore, but only do good! Shucks, they have the money to start doing good! WTF are they gonna do with their piggybank holding billions and billions otherwise? At least he could have given that school where they went something more worthwhile than a bit of paving...
 
I kinda agree with mook..this just seems like more lip service. He wants peoples sympathy cos of the tough times and it seems people are falling for it. We here only care about the future of this country's telecoms not about papis past or anything else. I too say that seeing is believing..and im yet to see ANYTHING meaningful being done by this guy.
 
How can they say he's not interested in enrichment through share options and make him look selfless? He got a ridiculous bonus last year, he's making millions! WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!
 
I tend to agree with mook...

Seems the guy has lead an interesting life and seems to have SOME decency in him ,but he did really say anything about telecommunications in this interview that makes me like him or telkom any more.

Let's not get too carried away with naive sentiment.

I prefer actions to words...
 
I think by and large we are still pro-Papi as he hasn't done anything to anger the community yet. Of course, he hasn't done anything good yet either. The reluctance to let go of the infrastructure worries me a little but he seems like a good guy with genuine concerns for the country's future.

I just wish he'd give some concrete answers once in a while...

Public: "What are Telkom's plans for allowing competition and rolling out world standard DSL plans?"

Papi: "We plan to ... blah blah blah concrete plans blah blah. We pledge to blah blah within 6 months. Here, let me sign this paper to that effect."
 
I can't believe you people are falling for his PR-image propaganda B/S, this man could single-handedly turn around the SA economy with cheaper telecoms. He's just as bad as Lulu or that minister from Carte Blanche, Telkom's actions are inexcusable, and fake sentiment artificially created in an article like this serves no purpose other than to disguise the truth of the matter and create a likeable public persona for someone at the head of a huge corporation ripping off and slowing down the whole country's economy, all for the sake of incredibly out of proportion profits.
 
In the end i don't care if you a 'nice' guy or not, just the price i got to pay.
 
It's easy to give off the impression that you're a nice guy. Especially through media.

There are two possiblities:

1. He actually is a nice guy, and he wants to do good. But unfortunately he is not able to because he is woefully incompetent and just a puppet to the shareholders, who are blackmailing him, etc.

2. He gives off the impression that he's a nice guy in these little PR articles and doing little publicity stunts, while he's actually a money-grubbing megalomaniac exploiting SA while stuffing millions in his coffers.

It seems pretty obvious to me.
