BODY FOUND AT FISH HOEK BEACH IDENTIFIED

The family of a man whose body was discovered at Fish Hoek Beach have come forward to identify him. The police have ruled out foul play.
The family of the man whose body was found tied to a mooring block at Fish Hoek beach have come forward to identify him.
News about the man’s identity spread across the valley on Tuesday 13 January.
Fish Hoek police have confirmed his name is Andrew Pennacchini (50) from Muizenberg.
Pennacchini’s body was found by the Shark Spotter’s crew on Friday 2 January, tied to the mooring with cable ties.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Peter Middleton the post mortem has been completed and at this stage the police do not suspect foul play.
He explains the man’s hands were tied in front of his body and not behind his back.
The cause of death is drowning and Middleton says the evidence does not point towards a murder.
“For this reason, Fish Hoek police have been investigating an inquest docket,” he says.
“The evidence suggests this was a suicide but the docket will still go to a magistrate before it is closed,” he says.
Last week police cluster commander Colonel Martin Swanepoel explained since the discovery, police were going through missing persons reports to see whether any of these matched the body found on the beach.
During this time, Middleton explains, the station was contacted by two families from Gauteng who had reported a missing relative but these were “negative”.
Middleton explains following a media report calling on anyone who may know the man to come forward, the investigating officer received a call from a relative enquiring whether it was Pennacchini.
The relative then sent police a photograph and the officer arranged for the family to identify the body.
“They identified the body on Friday 9 January and I was notified on Monday 12 January,” Middleton adds.
A bag belonging to Pennachini was also found on Fish Hoek Beach.
Responding to reports about cable ties found lying on the catwalk, Middleton says these did not match those found on the body.
