A new laptop hard-drive

A friend of mine with a HP NX8220 laptop's hard drive has just given in, and as such, he's looking to replace it. The laptop's out of warranty and he hasn't spoken to HP yet so I'm not sure what they charge for a new hard drive.

The spec sheet at http://www.laptopdirect.co.za/download/HP-NX8220.htm shows the laptop takes 40, 60 or 80 GB (5400 rpm) or 60 GB (7200 rpm) hard drives, but is this SATA or PATA?

Would he be able to purchase one of the following Seagate Momentus hard drive from Rectron, and just fit it himself?
- Seagate® Momentus™ 7200 Series - 80GB Mobile Serial ATA (SATA) - Serial ATA 150 With 8MB Cache @ 7200RPM
- Seagate® Momentus™ 5400.4 Series - 160GB Mobile Serial ATA (SATA) - Serial ATA 150 With 8MB Cache @ 5400RPM
- Seagate® Momentus™ 5400.3 Series - 80GB Mobile Parallel ATA (PATA) - Ultra ATA/100 With 8MB Cache @ 5400RPM

See section 6.4, it also list the HD part numbers which you can usually search with on HPs site.
Section 7.5 specifies the HD interface type as ATA-5 which is PATA as we know it.

Easiest way is to remove the HD and look at the physical interface. You cannot miss pata as it has a long 44pin (40 data & 4 power) male connector.

Get a 7200rpm drive as it will speed things up but you pay a small penalty in power usage and noise.

Yes, he can fit the drive himself, procedure is simply and usually only requires a screw driver to unscrew the the caddy & remove the drive from the caddy.

great, thanks for that, couldn't find the service manual and the laptop isn't widely supported these days.

A 320Gb 7200 rpm laptop HDD is a great upgrade, and will let you see a marked improvement in the machine performance. I bought one a couple of weeks ago for around R1000.
