With today's increasing crime and attacks on females in particular, I've been wondering how females are prepared to protect themselves?

Do you carry a weapon, had self defense lessons etc?

I have a stun gun which I keep in my car, luckily I have not had to use it yet :)

Ive been attacked before, while my pepper spray was in my bag which they got off of me ... I don't believe weapons help, I think they are mostly used against you ... I tend to try be more careful now, at night I don't stop at red robots unless I have to etc ...

I have mace, but I doubt I'd be able to get to it quickly enough.

I have done self defence classes, used to do karate too, so I know the basic principles. Mostly, though, I'm aware of my surroundings (without being paranoid, you can take it too far) and avoid dangerous situations.

Ladies, there is no weapon or training that can guarantee your safety in SA. In Sydney or Perth you'd never need it - guaranteed. If you are under 30 yrs then you should definitely seriously consider leaving. Just looking out for your well being. Seriously consider it.

What kind of daft advice is that!!

Sure we have a high crime rate, but there's crime in every country. You cannot be guaranteed that crime won't hit you where ever you are.

Not all of us can just pack up and leave - its a costly affair, some people have commitments. Its not easy just packing up and leaving.

Weapons should be used as a last resort - by the same you get them out the crime is almost over. Takes a few secs to hijack/mug you. Just be aware of your surroundings - be wide awake.

Nope dont carry any weapons, but im a very cautious person, dont drive on deserted roads late at night, dont stop at red lights at night unless i really have to and i never ever leave anything on the fron passenger seat or any of the seats of my car for that matter....

I carry no weapon.

I try to be cautious and not do things that would endanger me, but I guess when my time is up, it's up :(

Violent crime people. The level of violent crime in Aus is nowhere near SA. Forget it, live in denial and go shop for weapons :D

I do not really get your attitude. You talk down to the peeps choosing to stay here, as if THEY did something wrong.

Do not mean to be nasty to you, but save that attitude for the perps!

It's the same advice that Breyten Breytenbach (yes, the lauded academic who spent years in prison fighting Apartheid) gave to the general public when interviewed about the violent crime situation in SA.

Hehe denial is a beautiful thing :D

I didn't 'talk down' to anyone first. I made a suggestion to some ladies that were discussing how to arm themselves. People called me daft, etc, etc...Read the thread in the same order it was posted.

My uncle and his family were held up in their home in Australia, so please ... There is crime everywhere. My cousin was almost stabbed on a train in the UK and was very lucky to have had people come and help when they did. Crime is everywhere. The fact that people choose to stay in SA does not make us idiots, some of us have things tying us down etc. I personally love this country, and I believe this post was aimed at helping people become more aware of their surroundings and not a moan session on how to escape the country.

If you believe the levels of violent crime are equal in Australia and South Africa then please by all means stay and arm yourself.
