A question I thought I'd never ask... help me upgrade

Big price difference between those 2 boards.

Intel I5 2500K
Asus P8P67 pro or evo
Use your current ram and gpu till you can upgrade the gpu again...
 
Ohhh q6600 such is tasty CPU if u can get it. I've currently got one of them, OC'ed the hell out of it and currently run Crysis 2 extreme everything at 1920 X 1080 with no slow down on a 560ti no SLI or anything else fancy. Anything over 3 ghz on a quad core seems to be OK for modern games and avoiding a graphics bottleneck unless you are running massive resolutions

What about the MSI P67A-C54 motherboard which retails for ~R1100?

The Asus P8P67-M motherboard has a few drawbacks, like no USB3, only 2x RAM slots (which could cause like incompatibility with certain coolers like the CM V6GT) and I've seen quite a few complaints about Asus products recently.

If you can get the Q6600, then I would suggest that you take it and OC the living hell out of it :D
The Q6600 + a decent GFX card would get you quite far like Jladan said.
 
If you go for a K-sku chip don't get the P8P67-M as that board won't allow you to OC.

+1 for a Q6600 and better GPU for a cheaper more convenient upgrade.

Uhm no.
Tthe P8H67-M won't allow you to overclock the K series CPU's, but the P8P67-M will most definitely allow you to overclock it.

All the P67 chipsets are capable of overclocking a K series CPU, but like some of the Intel P67 chipset motherboards does not allow overclocking of the RAM above 1333MHz (according to their data sheets).
 
Everyone saying go Q6600 - I reckon a Core i3 smokes a Q6600 anytime, even an OC'ed one.

Sort of yes ;)

If you don't OC the Q6600, then a Sandy Bridge i3 2100 will smoke it: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/53?vs=289
If you moderately OC the Q6600 by 30%, then it will be like on par with the i3 2100 in terms of gaming performance according to those benchmark results.

The Q6600 wouldn't cost him near as much as a whole new i3 2100 setup though.
 
Hmmm .. the Q6600 does kick ass! The i3 is a dual core meaning it has higher performance per thread, and it has lower power consumption. But still not enough to warrant the price, you're right.
 
So, this is where you stand then:

Q6600
Nice cooler, maybe even a H50
New mobo, so that you can OC
GTX560TI
Better PSU.

At least you will be getting the CPU for free. Check www.carbonite.co.za for a mobo and PSU and the rest you buy new.
 
I know, however the CPU I selected was similarish to on OC'ed Q6600 :) I was trying to get the clocks close to each within a reasonable Q6600 OC. You should be able to hit 3Ghz with no problem
