A slow-motion digital migration

ARGH! SA Guavamunt are such a bunch of utterly incompetent idiots!
Now the device isn't even properly interactive?
If they'd bought a design/the same box as the sky/sky+ boxes in the UK, most likely for WAY cheaper than R700/box, it would have that functionality.
Hell, even a basic multichoice decoder only costs R399, admittedly, that's without an upload path.

Their thoughts of putting sim cards in the devices instead of making it locked to a landline are unfortunately the only real way to access a lot of the remote communities due to Telkom's lack of supplying basic phone line services to everyone.

Why oh why are such morons running things in this beautiful country?

i will not buy one of these crappy boxes, i 'll rather get dstv (shudder) .

Don't worry guys - like all Government projects, this will take at least another decade to get up and running (if it ever does).

By 2011, they will still be discussing forming the committee to discuss the project..............

so instead of paying R300-R400 for the most basics, they argued that we will have to pay R700 and get more than just the basics. Now we pay R700 and get just the basics? Lovely, just (#*(*# lovely

Translation : Eish, we cannot what what use the boxes from anaaather country because that would make our wallets not so heavy as they are now. we MAAAST make it in South africa, and have as few features as possible so that in future we can charge you for an upgrade, that way, we win from the government subsidy, AND from you when we give you the interactive features that are supposed to be there at the get go....

Hey, I thought that the CA module would handle IRDETO2 as well? What about all the ananlog Mnet viewers ?

Analog M-net is not being handled at all, in fact, you can't even buy an analogue decoder anymore, if you try talking to them about it, they inform you that it's discontinued and you'll only be offered analogue m-mnet if you have an old M-net decoder, but it's not officially supported... you'd find a tough time even getting your old decoder repaired! - ask me... I've tried!.

Funny - some time ago they actually said the STBs will handle the new digital terestrial M-net broadcasts. I have always thought that Monochoice would just push everyone in the othe DStv realm.

Hey Guys

The truth of the matter is that the above mentioned boxes (R300-R400) are subsidised by the networks, the sky box is made by companies with a "similar" costing structure (if not higher) to the one in SA; this subsidy makes the price of the box and service more attractive, and as one quickly realises, the subsidy can be covered with the subscription quite quickly (assuming the box costs around R700 like the unsubsidised SABC box).
The government will subsidise many boxes, but you’re going to have to be financially challenged in a big way to get one of those.
It actually turns out that 90,000 boxes made by Pace (international manufacturer) are being recalled in the UK right now

Regarding the CA stuff, I would like to mention the idea of there being multiple boxes on the market, ie one or two design for SABC and one designed for MaximumChoice, who knows there could even be more (PVR's with return paths included).

As above there is hope for M-net lovers.

Good article although some of the time frames for the commercial launch is a bit iffy- anything from July to November(according to the article). I'm also of the view that there should be several STB's on the markett...one vanilla-flavoured and the rest can come with additional enhancements like PVR and modem but I guess this will depend on the uptake.
