i have a 80gig HDD thats faulty i think,i really dont know how to fix it:eek:
The problem is if i connect it to a ide and put power plug on it the pc does not come on at all no lights nothing,as if the harddrive has a dead short on the terminals.
When i unplug this drive the pc boots up again. Is there a fix for this or must this hdd go into a recycle bin:D

This might sound odd but it worked for my 1 friend, he phoned rent-a-geek or whatever its called and they told him to turn the pc on without it plugged in and then plug it in in windows...I always thought that blew the hdd if it wasn't SATA but I guess not?

The hard-drive probably *DOES* have a dead short, hence the PSU trying to protect your PC ;)

Look for any obvious shorts, if you can't find any then try RMA the hd, if that's not a option best bin it :(

If there is data you are trying to save, then try it on an old computer. Otherwise just chuck it!

Try a bios reset, different cable, port and power plug

done all those already.
I do not see any faults on the circuit board,no telltale signs like burnt diodes components nothing..
It was working last week..now its a brick

Only other thing I can think of is that perhaps your wires on the plug are damaged or crossed. Either way the HDD is most likely dead :(

Sounds like a dustbin-candidate to me.

Unless there is very important data on it....then you would have to replaced the electronics portion of it by stripping an identical drive.

could be faulty IDE cable,

also check that the cable plugged into the motherboard (the right way around) .
*Some cables have a little plastic dippie so u can't plug it in wrong, but if yours doesn't the cable could be plugged in the wrong way in the motherboard, and your plugging it in the right way on the HDD's side*

Some mobo's don't POST if its wrong way round :>

or the cable is just plain faulty

Have you tried the freezer trick?

Oh, and if you can't remember whats on it then its obviously not important.
