A week with Apple ...

To those who care, all expensive things are status symbols. You should see people with foldable Samsungs!

Like I said, I don’t want to go down this road here. But I do disagree - isn’t the S22 Ultra like 20% more expensive? That’s got nothing to do with status

They brought up money and wealth with an iPhone - and I agreed?

I agree though, it doesn’t belong in this thread. But it seems that nothing negative should be either.

If I say I feel something is wrong or could be better, it becomes an issue. For sure example I genuinely believe that they should have a separate iMessage app and remove SMS. I would definitely use it where I could.

Now though? It’s pretty pointless as the chats are lost in SMSs

I agree with you on this. I do wish there was a way to separate sms from chat because of all the crap we get via sms.

Then again, I hardly use imessage since 99 percent of my chat is via whatsapp

This thread is making me think to reconsider my decision to go back to iPhone when my work upgrade comes due toward the end of the year, lol. My last iPhone was in 2011 I think.

I was also thinking of giving the whole Apple ecosystem another go, I'm due for a new phone and laptop soon, if anything is putting me off it's the user base and not the devices.
Meh, might still give it a shot anyway, just wont ask for advice on here.

Why? It's one thing asking for advice and accepting it and another to be almost trolling along bringing up spurious minutiae and then going on and on about them.

I've asked for advice for both iOS and Android and never had a problem getting answers on both,

Don't let the user base put you off and please do ask for advice - some of us will genuinely try to help.

Probably the best advice I can give you is that you really do need the ecosystem to realise the full benefit of the synergies between the devices.

I started with only the iPhone, and, over the years, slowly added the other bits and pieces, some out of my own pocket (airpods, apple watch, ATV), others work funded (Macbook Pro, Ipad) and can honestly say that the level of integration between these devices has enhanced my work workflow and personal workflows.

The airpods ability to seamlessly switch between the phone, macbook, ipad and ATV is probably the one feature that I most appreciate - I pretty much have one airpod (I alternate all the time) in my ear from the morning until evening.

The other thing that I genuinely appreciate is the longevity of the devices - my wife still uses her iPhone 7+ (stubbornly refuses to let go of the touch-id), younger daughters have hand me down iPhone 7's, older kids iPhone X's. There are two hand-me-down / 2nd hand Macbook Air's in circulation (one is 7 years old, the other around 10 years old) - they all still work perfectly (the two iPhone 7's and one of the X's had their batteries replaced). I also have a couple of old, rather battered, iPads that are also still serving a useful purpose (one as a wall/world clock, the other as a Weather/Dementia clock).

In the time that I've had these Apple devices I"ve also had various Android Tablets and Phones and Windows Laptops - with the exception of one Dell Laptop none of the other devices have had as long, useful and productive lifespan as the Apple devices.

Edit: I was an Android user for many years, and loved the flexibility and configurability, until my last one (a Sony Z3C) crapped out on me after just over two years. Made the switch (iPhone 7 was the flagship at the time) because I couldn't get a Pixel over the counter here in SA,, was fed up with the OEM Androids and their bloatware, long time periods between patches, and seeming obsolescence after 2-3 years. Never looked back.

I’m not sure asking things like ‘can these mails be deleted’ , ‘why do I get video stutter’ or ‘is there a way to properly share’ is really trolling?

Likewise, the ‘advice’ (or rather workarounds to the limitations) isn’t always a satisfactory answers.

In my opening post I mentioned that my old Face ID had the option of direct to phone or unlock screen, so it was a pity that Apple didn’t have. The reply was posts long about the workflow and Apple was right in what they were doing. I need to adjust or leave the ecosystem.

Really? Can’t just say that it can’t be done?

See? This is real answer to my question of separating email/iMessage .

Much better than ‘you’re doing it wrong / It’s an Apple feature / go back to Android’ answer

What don’t you like about the user base? Where are you seeing it in this thread? And then elsewhere? Quite a generalisation.

A user base shouldn't be reason to steer off a device. Everyone can do what they want and behave however. I might still go back because I did have a ton of paid apps I hope still exist (mostly got for free on special).

The thread just made me realise that iOS has evolved in ways that may not make it as appealing as I remember. I'm probably just not remembering well and got used to android over the years.

Lol, imagine depriving yourself of good things to spite people who dgaf.

I used to use the MyBroadband app on Android - but it’s not great on iOS. I was told to use Tapatalk instead.

So to answer you, never tried - but will try over the weekend

The MyBroadband App and Tapatalk are one and the same thing.

I’m not going to down the money road here anyhow.

Anyway I’m going to convert my Gmail contacts to iCloud contacts quick

I would not recommend it.

Not until you also have a MacBook and iPad.

Even after all these years I've never made the switch.

I’ve only done it very recently after many many years after finally being allowed to and to be honest it’s more from an Anti-Google sentiment than anything meaningfully beneficial.

Yet to make the calendar jump.

On the topic it baffles me I only discovered this when fiddling with iOS16 and Passkeys, but did you know you can just point your camera at any Authenticator QR code to register it against your Keychain?

You literally do not need any TOTP Authenticator app on iOS any more for the last however many versions, but seemingly nobody directs you to this functionality by default.

I knew TOTP was in the Keychain for a while but I’ve been doing it manually entering codes bemoaning how clunky it is, only for a failover Passkey to add itself as TOTP and discovering the camera can go it all.

What does converting Gmail contacts to iCloud entail and what are the reasons and benefits in doing so?

And are we talking about this?
