'AA/BEE' cake sale broken up

hahaha... Brilliant. I don't view myself as racist, but I do view AA/BEE as reverse racism. It's always been said that a wrong doesn't right another wrong. AA/BEE in effect, only does more harm to the newer generations - the ones who have no direct experience of apartheid.

It's a tired old tale, but people should get jobs because their qualified, not because of their skin colour. Just as students should get bursaries because they deserve them.

Then again, in a truly free nation, an employer should be permitted to hire whomever they please. Just as some employers are preferential toward non-smoking job-seekers. In the end, it's merely a matter of opinion.

But eh, those are plights that fall only on deaf ears.

Would be nice if a group from another university did the same thing but the opposite way around, just to see the different reaction from media.
 
Interestingly, of the 200 cakes sold, 145 were actually bought by black students (at 50c each) and 45 by white students (R5 each). A security guard also bought a cake (at the reduced price) before they confiscated their material...
 
I think the real question here is.. Was it Chocolate cake or vanilla flavour? ^_^

It goes to show that people will take advantage of a situation that benefits them with little regard for any ethical implications. This is a very big problem when the beneficiaries of an injustice are the ones who have the power to rectify the situation. In the case of AA/BEE (which is or was a neccesary evil ) can the beneficiaries be relied upon to dismantle a biased (justified or not ) system, once that system is no longer justifiable?

I was one of those 45 who bought it for R5. Nice cake though.
Should have asked the nearest black person to buy one for me at a reduced price for which I will pay him double back.

This cake sale and the methods used by white students to get a cheaper piece is a perfect example of what happens in the real world.

So what is wrong with AA is that it forces a prejudice on them rather than allowing them to enforce their own prejudice?

No the problem is that its against the constitution where we all should have equal rights and opportunities. there is no difference between AA and apartheid.

The Black cake was sold with a non-transferrable licence. It was for Black consumption only, so what you tried to pull would have been against Copyright and Licencing laws. You could both have been fined by the Student CPASA (Cake Producer's Association of South Africa) and your newly acquired R1.00 cake called a 'pirate' cake.
 
University spokesperson Stella du Plessis said it received a number of complaints regarding pamphlets distributed.

"The University was of the opinion that the content of the pamphlet depicted racial stereotyping which could cause division in the student community and therefore decided to preserve harmony on campus by removing offensive material," she said.

Sorry, but don't the university policies do exactly that themselves!
Seems it is only 'ok' to practice this form of racial stereotyping if it favors the majority and marginalizes the minority.

What we have here is nothing more than a University cowering to political pressures and not allowing freedom of speech.
It is what it is, but the administrators don't have the stomach when confronted with it and decide they just don't want to look at it at face value so they break up the sale.

Now I understand better why most cakes werebought by black students - they might have been "token" buyers in many cases.
 
Yea, but what about the BEE Shares that are made available at 50% discount that the bastard BEE Directors buy up like candy?
I suppose they could have had a Black person in as part of the plan and simply given him the ingredients at 50% off and all the profits + 50% extra profits to illustrate that.
