Guys, I’m going to Italy soon, will I need the AA driving permit or will my SA License do ?

Also it will be good to share your experiences on countries you’ve visited and if you needed the AA permit or not.

USA - yes
Australia - No

SA license will be fine, but make sure you do some research on their traffic laws - driving in some zones and certain times is not allowed and will incur a fine.

Get it to be safe. No hassles and a couple of hundred bucks. Not even worth all the admin trying to find out.

Driving in Italy?

Remember a episode from Clarkson's motor world. Good looks take precedent above all else. Look for it on youtube, its a good laugh and insight.

Yeah saw that clip, looking good takes precedence over the law ... well I’ll provide feedback soon :D

Varies from state to state. Some states, such as California not only don't require in international driving license, they don't recognise it, while NY does't require one if your license is in English.

I travel to USA at least once a year and every state I’ve been to (almost all), I was asked to provide the permit. Alamo is the one I mainly use.

That's cool - it is my first home. NY does not require a IDP, neither does NJ, Connecticut, PA... Alamo might but they're a car rental company, not a state authority.

EDIT: As far as Alamo is concerned

Customers travelling to the U.S. and Canada from other countries

It is important that customers check with the appropriate Department of Motor Vehicles in the States or Provinces in which they intend to travel to ensure compliance with their various licensing laws. The following practices are used to ensure the customer is presenting a facially valid license at the time of rental.

Customers traveling to the United States and Canada from another country must present the following:

  • Their home country driver's license, and

  • If the home country license is in a language other than English (or French, for rentals in Canada) and the letters are English (i.e. German, Spanish, etc.) an International Driver's Permit is recommended, but not required, for translation purposes in addition to the home country license.

  • If the home country license is in a language other than English and the letters are not English (i.e.alphabet is not an extended Latin-based alphabet like German or Spanish but is Russian, Japanese, Arabic, etc.) an International Driver's Permit is required.

  • If an International Driver's permit cannot be obtained in the home country, another professional, type-written translation may be substituted. In either case the home country license must also be presented.

  • Customers may not rent a vehicle solely with the International Driver's Permit. The International Driver's Permit is a translation of the individual's home country license and is not considered a license nor is it considered valid identification.

  • In some locations, including but not limited to offices in Arizona, California, Georgia, New Mexico, Nevada, and Texas, customers may be asked to provide additional valid government-issued documentation.

I’m going again in September , will only pull out my S.A license when renting a car.

I tried it once in LA (2015) but they asked for the permit. Took it for granted everywhere will do the same.

Guys, didn't even bother with getting a car.

Theres trams, trains and taxis everywhere. Most of the time I'm just enjoying walking the streets to my destination. Its really enjoyable.

Italo trains are much better than the rest. First class is really first class. On the others, can hardly tell the difference.

So if anyone wants to travel in luxury by train, Italo trains is the one you'd want.
