AA Sunset

not directly no, but was invited to the meeting in a sort of advisory capacity and to give support to the initiative, which I will, only because it's a positive move and quite well thought out, hey we all have to do something

Anything that helps is always good.:)

Just got a call, there will be more info about the organisation on SABC News tonight and in Beeld and the Pretoria News

Our house is like fort knox, with similar minded inhabitant alertness and protocols. May be that why we havent been surprised yet by this "gunmen suddenly standing beside our couch" syndrome.

There was also this BS, where a crime victim said on the radio "the guys just suddenly jumped over our electric fence", that just aint happening except if the fence is off/broken/malfunctioning or totally badly installed...

There is nothing concrete linking adverse poverty to insanity. Insanity prevails in the heinous crimes we have in our communities.

Povery and Crime linked - maybe. There are far poorer countries with more poverly and less crime. Crime is linked to having no Moral values. Many rich people have been morally defunct and involved in crime (Kebble, Agligoi etc etc) Its a convenient excuse to blame poverty.

IMHO, these people dont steal to get a DVD player,TV etc etc, its either to support a drugs habbit OR to sell the item and buy food for the family.

South Africa has no visible role models left. Madiba was the last brillaint man to show people how to behave and to live life with respect and pride. He Walked the walk and was not hipocrate.

EVERY criminal asks himself "If I commit crime X, what are the risks of getting caught?". Usually there is very little risk of being caught.

Exactly, even if someone had no moral constraints the risk of getting caught and punished would deter them, if there was such a risk.

Noting the symbiosis between political oppression and the apartheid capitalist system, the document says it was clear that if decisive action was not taken to deal with economic subjugation and exclusion, the essence of apartheid would remain, "with a few black men and women incorporated into the courtyard of privilege".

"The old faultlines will persist and social stability will be threatened."

Reviewing democratic rule, the document said the liberation movement could claim great progress towards a democratic and prosperous society "but we are not satisfied with the current order of things".

The document says that the crime battle cannot be separate from the war on want.

"In the main, incidents of contact crime such as murder, grievous bodily arm and rape occur among acquaintances in poor communities, where living and entertainment environments do not allow for decent family and social life."

Specific mindsets and historical conditions also drove elements of the crime problem, the document said.

The overall programme of national democratic transformation would gradually eliminate some of the conditions that bred crime, the document said. It calls for more focus on mobilising society to make life difficult for criminals in its midst.

Well I'm sorry I find this whole document problematical and farcical. "Noting the symbiosis between political oppression and the apartheid capitalist system." Who writes this stuff? Do they think the "apartheid capitalist system" was evenly spread? If you were white you had might? While on many levels this is true on many others it is equally false, and now they are using the same ideology to fulfill their own political aspirations, exactly as it was then. So they are re-perpetuating a system that gives privilege to a few while the mass struggle on, on their own. Racist policies are racist no matter the sugar coated lining of the "apartheid capitalist system." How far exactly, in the end did the apartheid capitalist system take this country? Some way, but nowhere near the greatness that could have been if we had all worked together from the beginning. Now this government is perpetrating the same errors again: their grand plan that isn't worth zip.

How many jobs has the anc created, how many have they destroyed? How much growth have they brought the country, how much have they destroyed? "We are not happy with the current order of things?" Now let's see: we didn't build power stations because they weren't BEE; they let telkom run roughshod over the economy because it suits their pockets, and let millions die because it doesn't agree with their view of the world. But they have endless rhetoric.

What don't they understand about the free-market and the capitalist system (notably something we have never had in this country, first due to the nats, now due to them.)

"With a few black men and women incorporated into the courtyard of privilege". Well they have certainly managed that, above the law and beyond the law. What else? Little of nothing besides hot air, lots of dead people, and companies saying they won't invest "as they could" in the country.

They sound like Bob.

PS. BEE and AA is interfering with companies on an operational level. Many would prefer not to do business within this regime but no matter: all your base be ours, if you don't like it you can just leave this country.

More of the same: different colour, same face. (And notably meetings about meetings, hasn't anybody heard of the phone, email? Ah, but then that could account for a lot.)

It makes me ill.

well so far it's a group of people in their private capacities, but with lots of experience, some former generals, military men, even a navy guy, the idea is that people will join the organisation bringing more expertise and take the campaign to grassroots level, there will be no joining or membership fee, but it is hoped that big business will support it as part of their social responsibility obligations

It is hoped that Government will engage the organisation in discussions to share ideas and such, although this is not a priority, it could be helpful.

edit : forgot to add - this is not a fly by night organisation, it should go somewhere, among the leadership is

Admiral Ockie van der Schyf (ret)
Jaco Mulder (MPL FF+)
Gerrie Wolmarans (MPL FA)
He didn't do well in the arms deal corruption hearings. I hope he doesn't do anything dishonest in this venture.

Employ and train another 150.000 cops. Increase their salaries,
build more prisons, build more holding cells and courthouses,
employ more prosecutors and magistrates. Get tougher on
crime by increasing the punishments. Child rape - 30-40 years
in prison, rape/attempted murder 20-30, murder - life, armed crime where
someone's life was threated with a knife, gun or whatever,
minimum 10 year sentence. THAT would stop crime. Publish
this on the front pages of papers, and during ad breaks for soap operas,
sports matches on TV. Get the president himself to address the
nation saying that crime will be stamped out, that people who
threaten other's with violence will go to jail for a very long time.
You would see investors and tourists coming back and spending
more $ I'm sure :).
