I'm definitely a linux noob... but even so I'm getting really irritated with Nvidia drivers and Ubuntu 8.04.

I cannot get the damn OS to recognise my multiple monitors or to set the correct resolution. If I install the nvidia-glx-new package I get 640x480 on one monitor, and if I install nvidia-glx-legacy I get 800x600. If I don't use nvidia closed drivers, I get 1024x768 on the other monitor... aaaaaargh.

I'm now downloading the 169.12 drivers from nvidia directly as well as nvidia-xconfig.

This better work, or I'm deleting that partition tomorrow!! :)

Been there, done that.

Was even in a worse position where neither my GigE nor WiFi adapter were recognised, so didn't have net connectivity. Suppose I could have persevered by trolling through forums/howtos & using USB, but it just seemed like too much hard work for little gain.

After failing miserably to get the Nvidia (from nvidia.com) driver to work I tried with Envy... no dice. :mad:

Am now using Envy to remove all Nvidia drivers... for some reason it is downloading a 13MB file to do this :confused:
 
You mentioned the 169.12 drivers. That is the 64-bit drivers if I am not mistaken. I have had compatibility problems with nvidia and Ubuntu 64-bit. However, when I installed 32-bit, my problems were immediately solved without having to use envy, download drivers from the web or anything. I simply installed the nvidia-glx-new.
 
169.12 are the drivers that NVIDIA suggested from their website for my card (Quadro FX1000). I'm using 32bit Ubuntu. I had no problem on my laptop but on my desktop I'm now considering giving up on the install.

After I install any of the nvidia drivers, I either get a really low res or a signal out of range (9kHz, 9Hz..:confused:).

I don't have the experience to modify any of the X settings, and frankly wouldn't know where to start.

My bad. Didn't realise the 32-bit drivers were had the same names too (only when i checked afterwards did I see).

Using a dual monitor setup seems to be your problem, not the drivers. I cannot help you there as I do not use a dual monitor setup, but have found some links for you that should help:

Actually it's not just the dual setup. The drivers do not recognise either of my screens correctly. The is evidently a bug in the X settings that over-rides the Nvidia settings.
 
Haven't had any issues in getting dual-head mode to work under opensuse - although something got borked when I tried to install compiz-fusion... :(

Okay, now that you mention that you are having problems with even just one screen, you are right. You have driver issues too. But most likely if you get one screen sorted you will be able to configure your system for both screens.

You mentioned downloading the new drivers off the website. Have you installed those yet? Do they work?

nope.. either the system gives me a blank screen (9.8khz, 9Hz signal out of range) or it defaults back to the open nv drivers which don't work. I'm going to have to learn how to edit the Xconfig file to fix it I think. But not today.
 
Update: I now have dual monitors working as dualview under 8.04. :D

I had to edit the xorg.conf file manually, but I've got it to work... kind of. :confused:

My two monitors are different resolutions and one is connected as analogue VGA(1024x768), whilst the other is connected via DVI (1280 x 1024). I can get both monitors running at 1024 x 768, but I can't get them both working if I set the one to 1280x1024.
But this is a problem for another day...

Before I modified xorg.conf and got the monitors to work at 1024x768, I tried nvidia-config, but every start-up just reset the the drivers back to the nv driver and discarded all my settings. I think that there is a bug in Hardy in the way that it deals with the closed nvidia drivers.

That said, I haven't tried it since, and it may work now. I've been using nvidia's Xsettings application without any luck so far. I'll try it tomorrow - no time today.

edit: In the process of getting this to work, I installed the 386 kernel (instead of the generic), and I've just noticed that my Realtek Audio no longer works... grrrr :mad:

You did run the nvidia-settings by starting it in terminal right with the sudo command?

Well thats the only way it works... right? Since I'm a lazy git, i generally make sure that I have as many rights as I can get.
