mokleT ruk nou die dam onder die eend uit.

I ordered my HomeDSL 192 last week and followed up yesterday with their ADSL technical department for my installation date... shock, shock, horror  ... they gave me a date of August 23rd. Maybe I should confirm the year 2005

Now they seem more like a bunch of fools than ever before. How high an IQ does it take to anticipate increased ADSL orders when the price is made a tad less preposterous?

They're not the most intelligent company on the planet...and it's ironic they have job cuts when the lower the price for a service...

*makes notes to self on ADSL expectations for Xmas 2005*

But don't worry - to speed things up they have tested the install it yourself service.

Somewhere in teklom's fertile imagination, they came up with this idea, they won't hire more people to get the job done, noooooo, they'll get the customers to do the work, and put more pressure on their helpdesk and support lines. Anywaaaaaay....

When this service is "live" (1 Aug perhaps) - phone them again and see if your exchange can be prepared for a do-it-yourself installation, maybee that way you can get ADSL before Feb 2006.

Hi h0ll0w

Thanks for posting this information. We are currently investigating the possible effects of the job cuts on Telkom’s ability to deliver services to its customers. As you might know I am also currently experiencing problems with Telkom’s service delivery. I am documenting all activities, calls etc…maybe a good idea if you do this as well.

Regards,

RPM

Hi RPM

I have also ordered HomeDSL 192 beginning of June 2005 from Telkom ( canceled MyWireless ) Telkom also gave me a date 10 August 2005 apparently no ports is available

can send you Telkom ref number if you need it

Im still amazed that mine took 4 days from ordering to installation =)

Are all these requests for the Gauteng area? What are things like in Cape Town area or Western Cape?

Im from cape town. And most of the people i know had their lines installed within a week. Go into a telkom store, deal with a sales person, they force things through to get their commision :)

I'm in Cape Town as well, Bellville to be more specific.

well think with all the new adsl ppl applying there will be alonger wait makes sense to me
Not to me. Telkom go and fire people left and right instead of recruiting additional techies in anticipation of increased demand. How does that make bussiness sense, or customer satisfaction? It doesn't, its another side effect of a monopoly. What would you do if you want/need a cellphone ASAP and Vodacom tells you they will have a cellphone + contract available 2 months from now? Most people will just go to MTN or CellC.
However, a woman in a telkom store did tell me that they are looking at hiring contractors to help out, so one can only hope.

in many countries ADSL installation is do-it-yourself .... so this is not a big surprise and I think it is much better way of doing it anyway!

xcept, in those countries, they are not charged a stupid ludicrous installation fee !!!!
But newayz - i agree - selfinstall is kewl if you're technologically ok with this ADSL stuff.

Applied for DSL384 22 June, called to follow up and was given an installation date of 4 Aug. This is in Camps Bay, Cape Town.
Seems the backlog is getting bigger and bigger by the day. It should have been DIY years ago, with no or very small install fee.

DIY is of no use if the infrastructure is not in place.

It seems as if Telkom lacks the ability to have cabling and ports available when required.

Maybe Telkom should invest in people who actually have the ability to make decent forecasts of the needs of clients and then act on it.

What gets me in the end is that even though that telkom's monopolistic incompetency frustrates me to no end, it makes me want to scream, shout, pull all the hair out of my head, break stuff etc. all at once, but there is nothing I can do about it, even if there is it all seems so in vain when I get news like this. :(

the plot fikkens

..Update...

It seems my luck changed. :D
Out of desperation I called the ADSL technical department (0800 456 786) again. Let me tell you most of those operators are just full of ****, but there are a few good ones. Anyway miraculously I got one on the line and he gave me a number of some ground level ADSL installation manager for my area. He also told me that it wasn't the number of ADSL orders causing the delay, but the technicians themselves had a hang up, and with telkom one starts to wonder.
Anyway so I called this guy, and to my utmost joy he said they can install it the weekend after this one. He contradicted what the call centre oke said about the delay.
So now lets see how this turns out, I'm more prone to trust the ground level techies, than the lazy call centre bunch.

I remember when i worked in a call center quite a while back i got R3000.00 per month, answering call after call. Maybe the service we get is proportional to what they get paid. Seems the upper managers take home a fortune for jack ****.
