About to get Telkom Broadband

Is that a bad move?

I wanna get a 1GB broadband connection at home. Will check if it meets my needs and then upgrade to maybe a 3GB option. Will get the 384kb/s(is that right?) option which is fine for sites like facebook, youtube and VOIP...I think.

I got no line so I will have to pay for that.
Then get a modem and a contract or a contract which includes the modem.
 
Forget Telkom, get your ADSL line through Axxess and a prepaid semi-shaped account:

384kbps ADSL line: R139 per month
Axxess Prepaid semi-shaped account: R69 per gig

Great thing about prepaid is that unused bandwidth carries over so buy as much as you want without fear of losing it.

Oh, and don't even think of tying yourself into a 24 month contract just so you can spread the cost of your router/modem. Just bite the bullet and buy it yourself, won't cost more than R500 - R600.

so I call Axxess for everything?

Once-off router at R600. options?
Line rental of 139 plus R69/GB say R209 per month then? And i top up for R69/GB whenever?

Is there an installation fee for the line?

The 24 month contract aint that bad. I've had my adsl for over 24months and haven't once looked back. The modem coughed and I just got it replaced from telkom shop the next day :)
I'd advise getting one on contract and in that way its guarenteed for 24 months, and more, as long as you stay with them. :D

they also have a 15% discount on shaped pre-paid for std bank credit card users, Axxess that is.

Check the Telkom website for installation fee, about R450, but self install is pretty easy and cheaper, if you don't mind a phone call or three and plugging in wires and typing in your user name and a password :)

what are their charges? u got a 1GB cap?

i can install myself, but i need an adsl line

Contracts are BAD, hmmm kay? Just don't do it. Locking yourself into a contract just so you can replace your router if it breaks is madness.

that also concerns me. having the option to move from a prepaid service provider sounds less risky into the future.

The contract is the line provider, ie the 384kbps line for 24 months from telkom - which you will need regardsless of the service provider, ie axxess or whoever. :sick:

But each to his own I suppose.
 
just moved to new place. no phone line, i think. i must confirm.

so i then convert the line to ADSL and pay monthly rental to telkom or Axxess?

then get a router by contract or once-off payment?

You will pay the line rental to Telkom, and the ADSL line rental to Axxess. This is a month to month service, no contract necessary.

Just buy the router yourself. If it breaks, go back to the store you bought it from.
 
so, theres a initial line fee to Telkom. then a ADSL fee to Axxess. so thats about R100 for Telkom and R139 to axxess per month plus the R69/GB

Yes, Telkom line rental is about R120 per month. The ADSL portion is on top of that.

So the calculation is:

Telkom Line Rental: R120 per month
ADSL line Rental: R139 per month
Prepaid semi-shaped account: R69 per gig
