Hi All, Perhaps there are some realistic opinions / facts that could be of some value.

I'm looking at the BB 8520 and get a mixed report from the forums regarding MTN vs Voda BB service at present. This could be very debatable but whats the predictions for the future? Will the service improve - email, browsing, and IM on the BB APNs?
 
eisch, i know how this thread goes- you ask question, the same people respond then you choose Voda who is not necessarily the better one all the time lol.
 
As far as I know the BB service on MTN is R140 while on Voda it's R60
 
mtn can afford to lower their prices(They own africa) Voodoocom operates only in south africa for the most part. So think rationally who you want to suport?

I don't believe your rates are accurate
 
Oh and to answer your question:

Getting BIS enabled on Vodacom is a lot easier. Over the phone. On MTN they want you to send it some form. Granted, this only has to be done once so it's not really a deciding factor.

Both MTN and Vodacom have slow days. Vodacom customers have been complaining it's VERY slow the last few days, but some have noted that it seems much better today so there is no real way of knowing. As far as I know both mobile providers use the same BIS server (provided by RIM) so it shouldn't make a difference who you chose.

Sitting at my SO's house, I am on MTN with full EDGE (on an 8900 Curve) and she is on Vodacom with GPRS (on another 8900 Curve).
 
I know four guys who had BBS. All four are now using Nokia smartphones...
 
BB's are cool phones, vodacom bb service has pretty much sucked for the past few months. I'd go mtn.
 
Not wanting to knock any SP, can only speak of my experiences thus far.

Took the VC 8520 Free on Weekender with BIS included total R149.

This is not a 3G phone so 99% of time it is GPRS and only occaisonally do get and EDGE connection.

It would seem that email gets a higher priority to browsing, because emails do come in quite quickly, but to be really honest, browsing is pathetic, actually worse than dial-up speeds.

Now it is debatable but other threads in the forum have implied that MTN has a larger rollout of EDGE towers than VC, so performance with MTN may be better purely because of their edge on EDGE, excuse the pun :D

I also have a Nokia 5800 (MTN) which supports 3G and it pips the BB every time on pulling the same messages from my mailbox.

VC is falling behind the curve and they dont seem to care, once the contract is signed your money is guarranteed, only thing is they are not bound to provide us with a decent BIS service.

Do a search for BIS on the forums and see the many complaints with Speed tests to show the poor performance.
 
Thanks to all that returned with some decent user experiences - I really do appreciate your feedback. I'm sold on the BB concept and find it very appealing when it comes to email and IM, Browsing is a nice to have. My concern is to be online most of the day.

So yes - not slating any SP, I have found Vodacom to provide better "Enterprise" value for their customers opposed to other providers. I presume this could be an isolated view.
 
Well well, I took the dive and got my BB today. All that I can say is Wow and Awesome. I'm impressed. I'm on GPRS and it is quite fast. I'm wanting to do the speed test - will try that shortly. So far I'm very happy.
 
My brother took out the Vodacom 8520 a month ago. After waiting for his phone for 3weeks and getting no answers from Vodacom at all he decided to go to MTN. Signed the contract, got his phone the same day and cancelled the VC contract. Now he is a happy MTN BB user. Just like me.

Blacberry users that goes to Nokia Smartphones? I did it the other way around and I'm a very happy guy. Ill use Nokia again the day they do something different.
