About 145 of Absa's IT staff members are still on gardening leave, while the bank attempts to assist them to find new jobs.

In February, ITWeb reported that about 200 staff were not successful in applying for positions within the reorganised structure and were escorted out of the building, carrying their possessions in boxes.

Fergus Marupen, Absa group human resources executive, says, so far, about 40 staff out of the initial 200 have resigned or have been placed elsewhere. At the moment, there are about 145 staff members who are still on gardening leave for the next two months, he says.

The bank's human resources department is contacting each of these people to determine whether its internal placement system is being used and whether staff are battling to find jobs, notes Marupen.

What on earth is gardening leave ?

IT employers, once getting shaftened, will NOT be patriotic towards the company should they be re-employed.

Blapsa plays a very dangerous game.

Nice....

ABSA, you will never have a cent of my money, ever. I will get an account at the bank of Nigeria before I put my money in your bank.

They ABSAlutely don't give a **** about real human beings.

Standard practise actually, many people just aren't aware of the term.
Garden leave (or gardening leave[1]) describes the practice whereby an employee who is leaving a job (having resigned or otherwise had his or her employment terminated) is instructed to stay away from work during the notice period, while still remaining on the payroll. This practice is often used to prevent employees from taking with them up-to-date (and perhaps sensitive) information when they leave their current employer, especially when they are leaving to join a competitor.

Ah, much like a lot of our politicians.

sounds alot like retrenchment even though absa denies it. they are forcing them out. security frog marched out of the building. blimey theres no dignity in that action.

Just the thought of building south africa up vs the retrenchment of able local workers in order to give some rich british senior citizens in some castle up in the north more money, is enough to make me cringe.

The staff is merely being moved back to their houses and their salary check to nevernever-land.

WOW getting paid for being at home...... That might be awesome. Atleast they are still getting paid while they look for a new job

If you a provider its not as glamorous as it appears. Providers look further down the road. Job hunting is a challenge in itself. Absa should grow a pair and call it a retrenchment.

Not really... because its the last pay cheque you will be getting for a while, with Standard recently retrenching, FNB overstaffed, Nedbank holding tight.... its not going to be fun for those people.

How its supposed to work is that you get a cirtain amount for every year you have worked at the bank... but because they forced all those people to be contractors they are just ending their contracts.

The gardening leave variety I am used to pays employees for the full duration of it...

Still sucks to be escorted out by security... you pretty much lose everything on your work PC. All personal emails, docs, etc gone.

There is plenty of IT work in SA. I get contacted on LinkedIn weekly about work (head hunters).

Absa is apparently going to outsource their IT (big mistake IMHO) to Gijima which will cost them more in the future IMHO. That is the way Barclays works in the relatively over saturated British market (outsource their IT) and thinks it will work here. Time will tell.

More and more I think financial institutions will try to outsource their IT or a t least some of it.

I've heard some scary horror stories of companies that did the same and outsourced to Indian companies.

ABSA are making good profits, but thats not enough. Instead of everyone benefiting from this, they are going to shaft their staff and fire a lot, which in turn will leave other staff with more work to do... while the shareholders laugh all the way to the bank.

ABSA/Barclays... wouldnt touch them with Mugabe`s penis.

Fire South Africans so British shareholders get more cash... sis.
