Absa defends IT staff moves

Outsourcing IT does.not.work.

Finish en klaar.

LOL agreed, basically you are handing the reins of your valuable IT operations to another company and throwing money at them because you can go nowhere else. If your IT operations stop, your income stops.

ABSA are making good profits, but thats not enough. Instead of everyone benefiting from this, they are going to shaft their staff and fire a lot, which in turn will leave other staff with more work to do

Will bite them in the end. What self respecting IT developer will go work for Absa after this stint?

We already have HUGE shortage of IT skills in SA. When Absa ever finds themselves needing to hire again they are going to have a hard time IMHO. Let's face it, IT folks aren't generally risk takers.

Pisses me off that South Africans are losing jobs for British shareholders.

And how sure are you that those IT techies can be trusted? :erm:

I'll rather have them in-house and know I can trust them than to let some unknowns have access to my systems...

I predict that Blapsa clients will be experiencing the joys of having spearphishing levelled at them

Maybe not in banking but nearly all the major and medium sized companies in this country have all desktop support outsourced to companies like Gijima and BCX, internal IT people tend to take lots of liberties. When they aren't core you don't really know what they're doing.

I guess the same reasoning could be applied to accountants, HR, mechanics ets etc.

IT employers, once getting shaftened, will NOT be patriotic towards the company should they be re-employed.
Blapsa plays a very dangerous game.

RE. about 200 staff were not successful in applying for positions within the reorganised structure

I wonder how many of them looked at "worst case scenario" immediately they had to reapply for jobs and copied any potentially useful data then and there.

All of those 200 staff have good reason to feel vindictive towards ABSA and I hope some of them find a chance to pay it back.

Nice....

ABSA, you will never have a cent of my money, ever. I will get an account at the bank of Nigeria before I put my money in your bank.

They ABSAlutely don't give a **** about real human beings.

I've got news for you...almost all companies are the same.

More ammo for the new breed of 'freedom fighters'.

There is plenty of IT work in SA. I get contacted on LinkedIn weekly about work (head hunters).

Absa is apparently going to outsource their IT (big mistake IMHO) to Gijima which will cost them more in the future IMHO. That is the way Barclays works in the relatively over saturated British market (outsource their IT) and thinks it will work here. Time will tell.

More and more I think financial institutions will try to outsource their IT or a t least some of it.

I've heard some scary horror stories of companies that did the same and outsourced to Indian companies.

I was with ABSA for a brief period in 2007/2008 and I can tell you that a significant chunk of IT operations were already outsourced to Gijima. I'm talking about desktop, servers, backups, storage etc. The only parts that were not yet outsourced to Gijima were mainframe, Unix, Networks support, database administration.
When I jumped ship for an outsourcing company most people thought I was mad.
