Absa moving away from SMS and USSD

So now all the phishers need is your app password and then then can still rob you.

FNB also expects you to enter your bank PIN on your phone, which is a non-secure PIN entry device

The only time I enter my pin in when I setup the app for the first time (and has to be with the relevant cards number) and after that one uses one internet banking password to sign in.

Still, you have to enter a PIN that should only ever be entered on a device that is secure, like a pin pad, payment terminal or ATM

Why is your phone unsecure? It's not like they can do much with it (because you used a fake FNB app?)m unless they then come and clone your card as well.

'I assume you therefore don't use your online banking either as you would be entering it on an unsecured device?

Unless radio fingerprinting is used to prevent phone cloning then this is a cost reduction measure and not a customer risk mitigation measure. The risk of phishing remains the same and this risk is still determined by the gullibility of the potential victim regardless of authentication method that's used.

What does this mean?

According to Absa, clients will not need to re-register to use SureCheck 2.0 and it emphasised that none of their credentials will change.

I have ABSA accounts and FNB accounts. ABSA internet banking PIN is not the same PIN you use when you do ATM withdrawals and at no point does ABSA expect you to enter that PIN.

I concur.

ABSA even asks you if you would like to use Touch ID instead of a PIN for the app.
