Absa quietly changes default payment method from regular EFT to PayShap

They have a separate 'SMS Fee' as a monthly charge on the credit card side, but I never recalled paying R1-R1.50 to send an email or SMS as proof of payment when making transactions.

Even now when purchasing electricity through the app, they charge an additional R1.50 for who knows what.

This is on top of the monthly cheque and credit card account fees.
They used to add it at the end of the month. I did the odd pop so I know over and above my monthly fee, there would be a small service charge BUT it was actually included in the monthly deduction. I'm sure a while ago, because it was NOT transparent, they changed it so that those fees rather than being accumulated till month end, are now charged at time of use.

I have noticed this some time ago. It's very sly, bordering on scammy.

Big corporates will find more ways of milking customers, and leaving us with basically no recourse.

ABSA are total scum for doing this. I've complained about it, and their useless customer service representative essentially said yes, that's indeed how it works but worry not! I can still change it back to regular EFT for every transaction.

They have basically confirmed that what I complained about is indeed true and that they do not plan to do anything about it.

This is how consumers get milked, and there is not a thing anyone can do about it.
