Hey guys!!! Quick question. I'll be opening a Student account soon, and I would like to know what the minimum amount is to activate it. Their website hasn't been very helpful...
Thanks.

You're referring to the Absa cheque account for students? I think it's like R50.
It's pretty awesome.

You apply for it seperately (credit checks etc).
I was offered one at a later stage so took advantage of that.

I'd highly recommend staying AWAY from ABSA. If you love your money that is.

Based on what??

We've been with Absa for over 20 years and never had any issues with them.
I've been at Absa personally since I was.... 12, I think it was, and never had issues.
Their student accounts are awesome.
I've got investments handled by Absa and they are doing well.
My parents are at Absa private bank and they receive amazing service.

I am with Absa private bank. I pay R400pm in charges for zero service whatsoever. My private banker ignores my emails. I complained to his manager, he was taken off my account for 6 weeks, then he was back.

I have a student account at FNB and at Standard bank, the FNB being my primary one! The reason i also got a standard bank one was that it comes with a cheque card standard so you can use that online etc and you pay no fees for under 5 tx a month! The FNB is my day to day one and i pay like R21 or something for unlimited everything. That being said next years once i finish my honours ill dump the standard bank one and just get a FNB credit card/cheque card!

Was with Blapsa until 8 years ago. Total expenses (banking costs only) was R200 plus. Decided to defect to Wizzit.

Am much happier now, my wallet too! Banking expenses is less than R80 pm.

Try Capitec then draw cash from pick and pay and you won't pay any bank fees. The minimum you need to deposit there is like R250 or so. ABSA has insane bank fees.

As a student, Standard Bank or FNB.

Absa is the most expensive with fairly pathetic service. Wouldn't ever, ever use Absa. Even if I worked there I'd still put my money elsewhere :p (they probably have staff accounts tho).

Yes everything is free if you work at absa. They will also only pay your salary into an absa account.

So after being with Absa a few months, I can honestly say never again! Stay away from them.they have insane bank charges and hidden fees even for student accounts.

Yep, I'm on a student account with them and they charged me R170 banking fees last month. Turns out I had to take my registration papers for university again this year, and the put up notices inside the bank, but never cared to notify me via email or post that I had to go do it.

R170 is farking ridiculous. That money coupled with the fact that my electricity charges are up by 80% means I'm going to have to survive the next 4 weeks on an absolute shoestring budget.

Same boat man. Got R270 until the 25th. Luckily I've bought enough petrol and food to last until then but it's going to be tight.
