Hi,

I got into Android about a month ago - LG Optimus One P500

Coming from Nokia, I was quite shocked with the battery life and burning through 600 megs in 2 days.

Granted, the first few days are all about exploring and testing new apps - power and data intensive stuff

I found the phone was using data at about 5 meg an hour - just being on

Syncing Android, Gmail, Facebook, Twitter and who knows what
So I went searching for help - this little gem of an app was my savior

Data On Demand - FREE
https://market.android.com/details?id=at.hyde.dod

My fav setting is when the screen goes off, this app disconnect all data connections
So all constant checking and syncing has stopped - when you press HOME again, it switches Data back on and does the syncing immediately

Brilliant ! - after 8 hour my battery is on 76% and have used 1.5 meg during this time.

There are also schedule and other settings - play around

If you need constant live syncing, this app is not for you

I only use my WIFI connection and rarely any other cell data connection. I think I'm standing at under 5 MB for the whole month on my bill.

Unfortunately I need my data on all the time. I use whatsapp extensively to keep in touch with friends. Would be cool if it could only allow certain apps to use data but that's probably asking too much ;)

My data usage is between 5 to 10MB a day (with wifi on at night)
facebok, gmail, work email, whats app (all set to push), google talk sometimes on, and a little bit of internet browsing.

I would check whats causing your phone to use so much data, by the way, i am using a samsung galaxy S,

I use PhoneUsage as it also have graphs on what app use what amount of data. The paid for version also have alarm settings for calls, sms and data use as well as widgets so you can see your data use on the front screen.

As I fed my phone a 5 gig/pm sim I am not really worried about data so on demand doesn't bother me that much I just dont want something thats running in the background eat up gb's at a time.

You can also turn off background sync in {Settings} - {Accounts & sync} tab and if you really want to be selective you can do this on individual applications as well.

Syncing should only get you to around 10mb a day, so something else is up.

You can use 3g watchdog to monitor your usage, and pick up trends. http://goo.gl/HGhl
It'll also help you make a better estimation on your data bundle need once you're gone through a month of normal usage.

Data usage is only heavy if you watch videos and do heavy downloading, including apps and app updates.

Sent from my HTC Desire using MyBroadband Android App

+1...something is definitely not right.....are you watching a lot of HQ youtube videos?
I use a 2gb cell c sim, with data always on and dont use wifi at all ...and no way have I ever reached 600mb in two days!!
I have gmail, calendar, contacts background sync in auto and dont use any kind of task killer.
I have an app called net counter to see how much I data I use daily, weekly, monthly etc
