How not to run a business -- I was horrified when a colleague wanting to switch from prepaid Voda to prepaid MTN data, came back from our local MTN Service Centre (Rustenburg) to say the staff there all agreed it couldn't be done unless he bought an entire new modem! He wanted to use his existing (Vodafone-branded) modem.

This of course is absolute nonsense -- how can MTN 'experts' manning these centres not be aware that all they need to do is reflash the modem with MTN's software, or even simply get the client to download the generic manufacturer software freely available online and load it himself? It really ain't rocket science!

Trying to force an unsuspecting client to buy a complete new modem like this is unethical to say the least...

This doesnt always work Terence, fair enough they should at least provide him with an option to try what you suggest though.

Another option would have been to suggest using a mobile phone as a modem. I have a blackberry Storm and switching between MTN and Vodacom is literally as simple as switching sim cards. No need for mobile operator software or hardware. The settings for my mobile at least is the same for both networks. Hopefully Cell C is gonna be just as simple when they finally decide to roll it out. I'm not in PE by the way.
