AC Ryan PlayOn = Bad

Ok thanks for the feedback. Last i checked (a long time ago) was the firmware was the latest.

It doesn't sort into tv shows and movies. All vid files appear in movies including some baby Einstein crap i keep for the nephews. It doesn't use the nfo files or images i scraped for xbmc. I think it only uses fan art currently.

I'll see if i can upgrade.

Xbmc for me is wow. I use my phone as a remote, and it pauses what you're watching if you get a call. And resumes when you're done. It displays sms notifications on screen. Small things :-)
You get movie info, ratings, it even tells you where else an actor appears in your collection. WOL. YouTube, Ted, Supersport. Speaking of YouTube, with the Android app installed, anytime you wanna watch a YouTube vid on your phone you get the option to push it to xbmc, where it instantly starts playing.

I also like that it was free as I'm using my obsolete p4.

If you want stability get the RC (release candidate) and if you want features and slickness get the latest one available on the forum.

XBMC remains my first choice (for both Linux and Windows). If you use the PlayOnHD regularly including all the features it promotes, it is impossible to achieve more than 72 consecutive, uninterrupted hours of uptime without it crashing or corrupting (being very optimistic with 72 hours) - irrespective of which ACRyan / 3rd party firmware you use. I believe this to be true of most if not all media players in this category.

Thats the problem - its randomly using the local work where it pleases - even when not using mysql for the library.

I'm not too sure whats "lol" about using MySQL for your library, its quite common? When you watch something in one place, it shows watched through out the house, it also allows you to pause something in one room - and continue watching where you left off in another.

If you're not using MySQL for a shared library - you'll be using a derivative of SQL on your local installation for the library anyway.

Here's an article on doing it: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW-TO:Synchronize_multiple_XBMC_libraries

And here's what its using if you're no doing it: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBMC_databases

EDIT: I think you're getting confused between the actual files - and the library, i.e. meta-data on the files.

Ok, but you are saying XBMC is bugged, while you can't even ATTEMPT do this Library SQLdb sharing thing on an ACRyan?
You can't even scrape media in the first place on the ACRyan can you?

If local nfo files are present, it will always use that first. (It really should, otherwise something is very wrong)
I also can't believe that if it were to scrape from the web, that only 10% of your covers work :wtf:

maybe you should sort out your files a little and rename them properly with a utility like theRenamer? I get like a 95% correct scrape ratio after doing that.

I wasn't comparing xbmc to ACRyan, and I didn't say you could attempt to share the db on ACRyan? I also didn't say you can scrape media with ACRyan? I clearly stated XBMC isn't perfect.

And again, it doesn't ALWAYS use the nfo file, or the local poster, there are threads with other people reporting the same problems on xbmc forums.

My files are named perfectly in accordance with the guidelines on XBMC - there is not a single incorrectly named movie/episode and their associated files.

Maybe you need to try a multiple room installation with a shared library and terabytes of media before attempting to correct my installation.

i have a mede8er in the lounge and using xbmc on my lappy. the best media device will always be the easy to use one. i don't want to connect, plug in, switch or configure stuff still.

I've been trying out Plex Media Server and the Plex clients for Windows/Mac/IOS. I've got Plex Media Server on my Windows Home Server that streams content to my Windows Media Center based Plex client and to my iPhone, iPad and iPhone. It monitors folders and updates artwork and synopsis information automatically. It is controllable using the standard Windows Media Center remote and supports Harmony remotes. It can also be controlled with an iPhone using the remote thats built into the Plex IOS client.

My only problem is using it with an Apple TV. It can only be used if you jailbreak the Apple TV and i'm not too fond of that.

Except for that one issue, I find it perfect for what i'm doing.

Done.
Over 10TB and also used in multiple rooms.

i'm not trying to correct your installation, im just trying to help.

Fair enough, I don't have the SQL thing set up, so I don't have the feature of "pausing something in one room and resuming in another", but that just doesn't warrant all the trouble imo.
Plus the fact that only 10% of your series fanart is working - that sounds like a big trade-off to me.

I guess you run around your house a lot watching something on different TV's, and I just sit and flip through covers all day deciding what to watch :D :D

You missed the part about watching something in one place, and its marked as watched in another place? With over 10tb I'd imagine doing this manually must be a real joy.

Nah, dont use that either - i can pretty much remember what movie/series ive watched.

Either way, i use pseudotv, and that screws with your watched/unwatched statuses anyway...

72 consecutive uninterrupted hours of uptime? :wtf: Who watches 3 days of uninterrupted tv? Thats a pretty silly statement imo.
We often watch hours of tv in the bedroom on the PlayonHD and I dont think I have had the thing freeze for more than a year, since the last time I updated the firmware.
I suppose I should check and see if there is a newer fw than the one I am using but if it aint broken..

As I said, 72 hours of ==> uptime <== with ==> regular <== use during those 72 hours of uptime ie. Not watching/using it for 72 hours straight, but the device also not idle for 72 hours either, using it regularly during that time, and utilising all features ie. network transfers, all file types, internet streaming, all trick modes, and so on.

Yeh... xbmc is quite stable when it comes to that sort of thing - my one room running on an HP Microserver hasn't been shutdown in about 3 months

(actually - today was the first time, power failure outlived the ups)

The new firmware doesn't have any gui improvements. Anyway imo AC Ryan is a fail. I'd rather have paid a small premium and gotten a wd or something.

Its stable and plays everything sure. But it looks terrible, it's really difficult to navigate (i only use the file manager), and it doesn't have nearly as many features as an open source xbmc installation.

Tbh I dont see nearly that on my HTPC. Often XBMC crashes to the desktop, half the time the sound doesn't work :(.
The PC is stable, Ubuntu is stable, Xbmc not so much.

I think thats my biggest issue with XBMC on Linux, you have to use the EXACT hardware to gain the stability. I love XBMC but I just got tired of wrestling with it to make it work properly.
My mede8er just died (after 3 years of use) so I may get an HP with the correct HW and do it again... repurpose the Acer Veriton to something else.

yea I suppose buying a version of 7 home basic will be cheaper than buying a whole new machine.

Yeah XBMC is pretty K@K on Windows, I've seen it crash quite a few times... especially if you stop PseudoTV unexpectedly.

I have never seen it crash on OpenELEC though...
