FYI. Ac Ryan PlayOn Essentials is the worst media player i have had the misfortune of buying. Don't do it.

My disappointment has only been made worse by my recent discovery of xbmc, which I'm now running on my P4.

So if anyone out there is thinking of AC Ryan, just don't. I think the recommended alternative is mede8r.

Specifically the firmware is terrible. I mean really bad.

Anyway just putting it out there.

xbmc isn't perfect.. To many small bugs with library management that is starting to get annoying... thinking of going back to good old media center.

I have an htpc running xbmc, a mede8er and a couple of playonHD's

The playonHD might not be the prettiest interface, but it just works.

Agree. Library just doesn't work for me. I do it all manually and leave the library feature off. Works fine for me.

Art work doesn't display properly... I spent hours getting my local artwork in shape... we're talking terabytes of media... my library is hosted in mysql and shared across four XBMC installations - each installation handles the local artwork differently.
1.) Displays some of the fan art work, none of posters
2.) Displays some of the posters, none of the fan art work.
3.) Displays none of the posters.
4.) Displays auto-generated posters

Its highly frustrating, I've spent hours reinstalling trying to get it to work consistently with no joy - I don't get why you can't just turn off the scrapers and let it use the nfo and art work in the folder.

Thinking of trying Eden - but don't really feel like the hassle.

At the moment, all my posters display for movies, and about 10% display for series.

I've never had any issues with the xbmc library before and I've got about 3tb of content.

Don't think the AC Ryan is too bad either, its no xbmc but it has played everything I've put on it and it has good build quality and has a good selection of Inputs/outputs. It also looks good.

You know you can update the firmware right ?

Its not a bad player at all. Most of the time its a machine and super reliable.

The new software lets you stream direct from uTube

Uhm...But It does use the artwork/nfo in the folder? :erm:

I have no idea why you need an SQL database lol, i think thats where you went wrong....
TBO I don't know what you are trying to achieve with that really, or why it would be needed :wtf:

export your library to seperate files dude...do you know how to do that?

Thats the problem - its randomly using the local work where it pleases - even when not using mysql for the library.

I'm not too sure whats "lol" about using MySQL for your library, its quite common? When you watch something in one place, it shows watched through out the house, it also allows you to pause something in one room - and continue watching where you left off in another.

If you're not using MySQL for a shared library - you'll be using a derivative of SQL on your local installation for the library anyway.

Here's an article on doing it: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW-TO:Synchronize_multiple_XBMC_libraries

And here's what its using if you're no doing it: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBMC_databases

EDIT: I think you're getting confused between the actual files - and the library, i.e. meta-data on the files.

Nothing wrong with AC Ryan if that is what you can afford. Yes, Mede8er is better, but whatever works.
Have bought several AC Ryans for my friends. They work just fine.

3TB is light

I have an AC Ryan Playon Mini HD, apart from the latest 10 bit anime episodes, it works fine for me.

I have an AC Ryan Playon HD. Best thing i ever bought. It plays everything and i mean everything, dunno what the issue is

Agrweed. I have 2 AC Ryan Ess players, its far from the best player, but for the price is an awesome piece of machine, did you know it has better hardware than the mx500 mede8ter at less than half the price.
The latest firmware was also released about a month ago. I bought mine at esquire on a special R300, if you can find a player at R600 that can do what the AC Ryan does i will swallow my pride, admit i was wrong and shake your hand :-D

The big problem with AC R is that they are very slow with firmware releases, but at least they still have firmware releases unlike other players (cough...xtreamer Pro cough...cough)

When I was looking at moving away from a dedicated PC I considered the AC Ryan, Mede8r, Apple TV and WDTV Live.
Spent a lot of time reviewing then all and WDTV and Apple TV came out tops. I went with the WDTV Live over Apple TV as the ATV was only 720p.
Got 3 WDTV Lives and 1 WDTV Live Hub for taking away on holidays. They work perfectly!

I find that trying to manually generate your library creates problems. Since i used media companion to do my scrapping I've been getting restarts in library mode. The built in scrapers i had no such problem.

Its also if i don't give it a few seconds to load when i enter movies for e.g
