Anybody knows a site where i can get pdf versions of academic journals for computer science ... the main question is how old are they and whether they are free?

Try Google Scholar

All articles/journals/publications generally have a publication date attached to them. Bear in mind that a lot of the stuff you'll find will be behind a pay-wall.

Your institution should have access to some of these sites already - ask them.

For free access papers try arXiv.org

It's rare for me to have to resort to logging into the UP database/journal platform. Most of the time I can download papers just like that.

That is for CS papers. Mostly AI. Other fields may differ...
