I have an i20, in Gauteng driving like a saint I got 6l/100km (IIRC). On the highway I could, at 120km/h get no better than 7l/100km. And I really need to work hard for that 6l/100km.

In Cape Town (CBD), 8.8-9l/100km, most of the time spent is sitting at traffic lights (can take 30 minutes to drive 3km).

Hyundai i20 1.6 GLS (2010)

Sure the 1.6 is heavier on fuel but not a chance in hell you will get 4l/100km on any SA i20.
 
Ja I must say I don't really try to get a very good economy and I get 7.8l/100km (mixed) which I am quite happy with. I like wringing the 1.4's neck :)

I am really leaning towards the Polo, I'd like something with a stronger resell.
 
Most manufacturers rate engine power at the fly wheel, but what really matters is wheel power.
The weight and gear ratios play a role but ultimately the car has to put the power down on the road.
The easiest example I can think of is the Mazda MPS, has a lot of power but cannot put the power down hence most of its competitors are easily faster.

That being said these aren't performance cars, choose the one you feel is faster or better to drive.
The polo won car of the year, if its the latest i20 it's a tough call, if its the old bubbly looking one, take the polo.
 
I test drove the new i20 and Rio and I must admit that I do not like the fact that they only come in 1.4 and in 6 speed gearbox. 6 speeds on 1.4 to me just seems silly, also comes across underpowered because of it even though the kw are more. Unless I'm doing it wrong (test driving that is)

Yes. When I still had my 1.4 i20, I got 7.5-8.5l/100km. Best I ever got was while on holiday in the Garden Route. Stuck to the speed limit and no stop-n-go and I got 6.5l/100km. Only way you'll ever get 4l/100km is if you have a neverending downhill commute.

My Polo 6R 1.6TDI averages around 4 -5l /100km on the open road. I'd buy the i20 at that price range. If you want to spend a bit more go for the Polo or the Fiesta. I have to say I'm a bit disapointed with connectivity in the Polo. I had the Digital Media connecter fitted with mine and it didn't work when I received the car. I thought it was just a VAS configuration problem. Turns out my standard radio (RCD210) doesn't support the MDI device. I'm now stuck with an Aux port.

EDIT: Does anyone know where I can get a RCD310 or RCD510 new besides the dealer? :confused:

I chatted to the tech dudey at VW near N1 mall about the connectivity. He said, you can buy the face for R500 from VW to plug the hole after you take out the stock head unit. This face reduces the size of the hole so that you can put in a 'normal' sized CD player that could have USB on it. Honestly didn't like this option but it seems its the only one. It is kinda dof that the vivo has a cool entertainment system with USB and bluetooth but the polo gets the retro style CD player O.o very lame

Why do that? You can replace it with a double DIN unit, that will fill the hole?

Now I'm even more confused. I thought the RCD series' screens are fixed onto the unit itself. I doubt you can even use a VW "face" on a different radio. :confused:

It probably not a face, but a cover around an aftermarket radio that covers everything that should be covered. Not sure if I would like that.
