access numbers

whats with all the access numbers, *99# *98# *99*1*1# ...........
what are all the numbers we can use to access and why so many varients ?

*99# - uses default dialup string set up on the phone

*99***x# where x can be 1,2,3,4,5,6, etc. - uses profile number x on the phone. For example Ericsson uses a number called the CID.

Ok, on any GPRS,3G,ADSL,DSL,CABLE connection, you don't really have to dial a number, you just need start the connection/device, since the devices know what to do.

Take the 3G card as example - if you have the card in the notebook while it boots and you notebook is slow - the card will find the last known "connection" and book in without you touching anything. It doesn't obtain the IP address but stops right before that. (The two fast blinks on option cards and I can't remember Novatel)

I think they kept the dial up methode because of easy of use, imaging the 3g card was a network adapter (like you LAN), you would have to disable/enable it the whole time, same with CABLE,ADSL,etc. It also makes it easy for profiling connections, like v3g pointed out.

I think the std is *99<bla>, the fact that *98 works might be the device beeing clever and saying, well the user didn't say what profile so I will assume the default profile.
