I've had only basic experiance in the wifi field, and as knowledge is power i constantly empower myself...

If you have a string of access points set in bridge mode seeing each other, will they effectivly form a "backbone" with anyone connecting via a part of this string being able to see each other?

Obv you gotta work with fixed ip's and such so as not to have conflicts and such

Cheers

Access points in bridge mode can only bridge.
I.e. You will not be able to connect to the hardware as if it were an Access Point cos it's not an Access point - it's a bridge.

How about looking at having them as Ad-Hoc - and utilise something like OLSR for the routing? This is only possible if you have one of the Linux capable Routers - such as the Linksys series... we use this system and it works very very well...
