Accessing SMC Router via browser. Problems.

Hi,

Ever since setting my SMC router up to use RouteSentry (ie setting it to bridge mode via the browser) I am now no longer able to access it via my web browser using http://192.168.2.1.

When I first plug in the UTP cable into my laptop it finds the connection but as usual since changing my SMC to bridge mode I get the message "limited or no connectivity" I then use RouteSentry to "dial up" my two connections (international and local) and then am able to surf away.

What I am trying to do now is set up my SMC to go through my wireless Billion (locked to Nashua) to get some wifi action going at home. To do this I need to get into the SMC interface to change settings but as stated it does not allow me to. Once connected it just hangs when I type in that address and then time outs.

How do I get back into my SMC interface. When I plugged in my Billion I was able to get in no problem.

Thanks

I'm guessing your DHCP server is disabled, and you haven't enabled a static IP.

Start -> Run -> cmd -> ipconfig /all

Check what IP address you've been assigned: it should be 192.168.2.x where x is something between 2 and 255.

To assign a static IP address:
My Computer -> Right-click My Network Places -> Properties -> Right-click your connection (whether wireless or local area connection) -> Properties -> Highlight "TCP/IP" -> Properties -> Specify settings manually

IP Address: 192.168.2.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1
DNS Server: 192.168.2.1

Thanks sn3rd. I managed to follow some other advice given elsewhere and accessed it via another PC I have at home and did what I needed to do.

You are correct in that DHCP was disabled! As part of your other advice on the other thread, which I am going to go back to now to say thanks again as you advice worked brilliantly, I now set up the static IP!

Perhaps you could assist with a problem which has arisen. I am now browsing here wirelessly (whoohooo, did I say thanks!! :))but for some reason I am unable to retrieve emails in Outlook Express. Something I missed or some suggestions?

What error is given by Outlook? What ISP are you using for each account? Are you able to ping the mail servers?

What error is given by Outlook? What ISP are you using for each account? Are you able to ping the mail servers?

Well I have three email addresses set up in Outlook (one @openisp, one @openweb, and one @nashuaisp). When I was wired I was using RouteSentry so it was obviously directing the mail over which ever connection it felt, I assume the local one. Local was Telkom, international was Axxess.

I am waiting to get my Telkom password which I have forgotten so what I am doing now is not using RouteSentry but "dialing up" my Axxess account for connectivity. This is allowing me to browse but for email I get these errors :

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop3.nashuaisp.co.za', Server: 'pop3.nashuaisp.co.za', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.openweb.co.za', Server: 'mail.openweb.co.za', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.openisp.co.za', Server: 'mail.openisp.co.za', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Try checking to see if there is a connection between your computer and the mail servers:

Start -> Run -> cmd -> telnet pop3.nashuaisp.co.za 110

If you receive a prompt, you are connected to the mail server, so it's probably an Outlook setting gone awry. If you get something about not being able to connect, then it's a connection issue.

Since you are able to browse, etc, I would guess it's not a connection issue (unless you are having trouble browsing certain other sites?), so perhaps your Outlook is set up to use a specific connection ONLY... ?

Can't really remember Outlook menus, but I think it's Tools -> Accounts
Then edit the accounts (highlight them and click properties or something), then one of the tabs should be "Connection" or something similar.

Sorry I took this onto a new thread as no one was providing assistance due to this thread title but I'll tell you here what I have tried.

I ran Start -> Run -> cmd -> telnet pop3.nashuaisp.co.za 110 and got this :

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\>telnet pop3.nashuaisp.co.za 110
Connecting To pop3.nashuaisp.co.za...Could not open connection to the host, on p
ort 110: Connect failed

Someone suggested that some setting on the routers was blocking port 110 but I went into the Billion console and could not find anything under the firewall settings on there.

Also when I go into Tools -> Accounts -> connection in Outlook Express it is set to use any available connection. I have obviously not changed any other settings from before I set up the wifi as suggested by you to now, and was able to get email without a problem before when going straight through the SMC router. Not sure if it is the Billion causing the problems?

As you can see I have no problems browsing here. Although I did pick up that I was unable to access https://secure.telkomsa.net/titracker/ too, but was not sure whether this was because I was logged in with my axxess account?

I also just saw I get this error when I try to access www.telkom.co.za :

Forbidden
You were denied access because:

Access denied by access control policy.

And same problem with https://www.nashuaisp.net/? What the hell is causing this? Do you think the Billion wifi router is blocked as I got it from Nashua broadband?

Any other suggestions?
