Long story short, I hit our townhouse complex gate with a trailer, and as such am of course liable for repairs.
The management company said they will try and claim, and then I only need to pay the excess. The problem I see with this is that according to my understanding their insurance would then want to recover damages from me.

Should I just let my insurance contact their insurance or is there a benefit and high chance of success to just paying their excess?

I'd check with your insurance or maybe a legal person if you don't want to involve your insurance. You are right to worry that their insurance might try to recover the damages from you. Unless you get the agreement in writing then I wouldn't take the chance.

Isnt the complex insurance for common property and your building insurance the same? ie included in your levies?

Yes. The building insurance is included in the levies. It's also something I only learned recently.

Also it's not only common property. If your balcony collapses, the insurance will cover it.

Let your insurance deal with it, never ever let another person or insurance deal with things, you're paying for insurance for a reason.

1. Go open a case at the police. All accidents need a case.
2. Then contact your insurance with this case number.
3. Your insurance will chat to theirs and will fix the gate.

How did this happen? Long version? Did your trailer scrape the opened gate, or did the sensor detect the gap between vehicle and trailer and decide to close on the trailer?

It is a double swing gate. I watched for the gap between the trailer and the car, paying close attention to the left side of the vehicle. Then the wheel arch of the trailer, which is of course wider than the car, clipped the gate on the right side, which was closed and for use by vehicles going in the opposite direction.

The main damage from what I could see was the motor which opens the gate which had a bent arm. It also tore from the gate a bit. The trailer seems fine.

All this because I didn't want to get someone to help me check as I drove in.

Only for a Sectional Title, in Own Title HOA complexes you pay the building insurance of your own property. There is a separate insurance just for the common property
