hi Guys

can someone explain to me what happens if my isp account is a 2mb account but my linespeed is 4mb?

Thanks.

Your linespeed is 4Mb, so that's the speed you can download at.
However, your ISP is limiting the account to 2Mb, so your speeds will only be around ~2.2Mbps.

so im gettink 220kbs - when i could be getting 400kbs?

If you are on a 2Mbit account you will only be able to get up to 2Mbps (~220KB/sec) no matter how fast your line speed is. Upgrade your data package to 4Mbps if you want full speed.

Think of your line speed as the max speed of your car. It is capable of say 260km/h

Now think of your ISP as the speed limits on the highway, you are only legally allowed to drive 120KM/h, despite the fact that your car is capable of more.

I hope that makes sense - tried to explain it in a non technical way :)
I thought Froot explained it very well (1st reply to this thread).

Just remember you will download at which ever of the two speeds is slowest.

Not sure why there is confusion though. Should be self explanatory.

You must remember...

You cant have a fast line and a lower account and think you will get the speed while saving on the account costs...

Thanks to Their Careful Plotting the ISP still make sure that regardless of line or account speed whichever is lower that is where your speed will be at...

also remember that In South africa your line has a contention ration of 8 to 1 and in worst cases 10 to 1... this means your line which is 4mb is only capable of 512kbs or 410kbps (10 to 1) however on the ISP Side when they create the account they factored this in so they also manage it in the same way dividing it and limiting it to those speeds...

So with your Account being a 2mb you at best case scenario will only see speeds of 256kbps (8 to 1) or 205 kpbs (10 to 1)... i would actually downgrade my line to save costs or upgrade the account for the extra speed

NOTE: Contention Ratio is the term they use which actually just defines how many users share a connection in the Exchange so your line is never truely 4MPBS... so whatever your contention ratio you need to devide your so called Speed by that you get your actual line speed...

Think of it this way:

Both bottleneck each other.

thanks for the explanations -- makes sense.

doesnt matter anyway...being throttled to 5kbs
