accurate bandwidth counter

hello all.

I currently use Mcaffee Firewall which is erhm... my firewall however it includes a nifty little thing called: Traffic Monitor which gives me stats and funky stuff like that of how much stuff has passed through my internet connection. However ever since I got iBurst it has always said 1.somthing GB... so this leads me to believe that it doesnt like iBurst, or cant measure it or whatever. (I know I have downlaoded more then 4 GB in the past few days)

Any good appz out there that are simple, free and show me how much bandwidth I have used to the last byte.

DU meter, netlimiter blah blah theres a million way to count the bandwith
 
strange how it won't be able to pick it up, go into your Mcaffee settings, you probably just need to tell it it's should count bandwidth over your ethernet adapter...

using USB but that aint the prob. Mcafee seems to be highly inaccurate. It seems to think that I have only downloaded 1.54Mb today but I know I have done more then that.
 
oops. usb bad. best way to measure bandwidth is via snmp traps on an ethernet device. that way you can get volume graphs as well as per hour graphs expresses as a percentage of you available bandwidth per second. linux guys - check out mrtg...

why dont you setup a wireless network.
thinking of doing a "how to (try) secure wireless access points best practices" post to help the uninitiated. need to sus out the demand for such a post. is anyone here interested in me doing something like that?
 
wireless router = about R1000
wireless network card = about R300

you can go much cheaper, depends on what sort of quality your are looking for...
 
Linksys wrt54g, feature packed wireless router at cheap prices, if you shop around you may get them between 750 and 650. They also manage your IBurst Connection, the Modem goes directly into it via ethernet.

Which brings me back to the point of this thread. If you plug the IBurst modem directly into your router (router makes connection) and you connect other computers to the router (via wireless or ethernet, the router is your DHCP server and nat router) how do you then count your bandwith without setting up a proxy server on one of the networked computers which every body has to go through.
