ACER i3 - is this a bargain?

It's a good deal.

I got someone the 17" i5 Acer last week for the same price.

If you wan't one go buy it now because the stock does not last long.

Do you know what the model is so that I can investigate what ports the laptop has? Happy with the device?

My only fear is that the i3 is going to disappoint me power wise as I had a Dell i5 before....

It depends on what you do with the laptop. The i5 is quite a bit stronger in terms of CPU performance.

Like I even found my old Core2Duo T7200 mobile processor to be stronger than the old generation i3 380M :(

R4k for that laptop is still a rather good deal, but not unfortunately not as awesome as the deal Ponder mentioned.

Looking at this machine for home. It will be used for web surfing / office documents / office spreadsheets / saving photo's from digital camera and occasional mp3/DVD ripping to the hard drive.

My gut feeling is the i3 will more than suffice for the above. It will never be asked to run games.

I think your gut feel is correct. For what you intend using it for it will be just fine.

I wonder what is wrong with Core 2 Duo's?

Just playing with Core 2 Duo U7200 (ULV) (Fujitsu tablet) and it looks stronger than Core 2 Duo T5500 (standard voltage) on other laptop with fresh XP installation. Similiar configuration, the same chipset.
