Acer Netbooks

Does it use it's own OS?
It comes with its own version of linux but you can (with a little effort) install Ubuntu or (with great ease) install Windows.

Currently I'm dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 7. NB - I did crack the case and install more RAM but if you may not need it.

I'm also looking to get one sometime soon. At 3K it's totally worth it. I'll hook it up to an external screen as well as keyboard and mouse and it's the perfect work PC. It does documents and Internet, what more could you want.

Finally Incredible is looking to help create a market for Netbooks by lowering the price to a much more reasonable 3K. Considering it costs R2300 in the UK this is a pretty fantastic deal.

Yeah I reckon the 120GB model is a better option but they much more expensive :(

Mine must have been a hybrid as it came with the 120gb hdd but only 512mb of ram. Another reason for that model being more expensive is the XP license. :o
Oops, seems IC is just more pricey
The 120GB model is available at Laptop Direct for R3761

see - less RAM and no XP = lower price.

Ah yes, good point about the OS there bwana
That must be why Laptop Direct is cheaper: it has Linpus Linux Lite

I have seen a Acer One Netbook on 36 month Vodacom contract at R400pm with 500MB.

It seems pretty decent - but I notice no CD/DVD. Am I right in saying the only way to get data to it is SD card, USB stick, 3G or wireless?

What if there are large program which need to be installed? For example, Windows fscks out and needs a reinstall?

Secondly these thins have small spcs (Intel Atom 1.6 and 1GB RAM). This is cool if you get the Linux version ... but isn't that sluggish with Windows OS?

I get decent speed with my Lenovo S10 running Windows XP SP3. And mine comes with one key recovery (which I haven't tried yet).

People have successfully installed Windows 7 on these little netbooks so i'm pretty sure XP should run fine as long as its not bloated with unnecessary software.

On the other hand.. If you were buying the netbook off the shelf i would say get the one with Linux and save on windows licensing costs.
