Acer Netbooks

Thanks for the replies.

My ideal would be the little Linux one with SSD 8GB drive - but it doesnt have embedded 3G :(

How do people install Windows 7 without a optical drive?

Apparantly you can copy the setup files from d disk onto a flash and run the setup from the existing os. There are little things that come in the way. Google for windows 7 on netbooks and you should find some guides. I read about it on Engadget.

On the other hand.. If you were buying the netbook off the shelf i would say get the one with Linux and save on windows licensing costs.

The Linux ones often seem to come with less RAM - 512 vs 1024 - and upgrading yourself isnt the easiest thing I've ever done and it invalidates your warranty.

Windows is going to take up alot of that 8GB SSD drive - though you can add on to it via SD and the Storage expansion slot.
 
Had mine for a month now and I love it. I tossed the Linpus and installed Ubuntu. Not everything works out of the box and getting Wireless installed on ZG5 was a mission, still need to update the Ubuntu Wiki on how I did it. The R3K model is properly documented on the Wiki.

There will be a new distro in 2 months so I'm not put off.

Besides that, the only issue I have had is the lappie scratches very quickly, usually from my wife tossing it into her handbag. To resolve this, get a cover or make one (like I did).

No, it does not ship with a case. And nobody has stock of cheap ones either (R1k for a sleeve is dumb). Cost me some old material and 3 hours on the wifes sewing machine to make one. Actually quiet funky and it looks like a bible cover so now I can carry it down main road without stressing. :D
 
They don't have much information other Acer site.

Are there only 2 models out? One Windows and one Linux?

If the earlier posts are anything to judge by then no - there are a few configurations available.

It's seems cheap ;)

R279.00pm (36 months = R10,044) gives me the baby Acer One, E220 with 250MB data. I think the data alone is R150pm (36 months = R5400.00) - and I'd use that.

So yea, the netbook is just over R4,600.00 over the 3 years - which is only slightly more than a R3,000.00 netbook and E220 now.
 
The bigger one is R398.00pm (36 months = R14,328) with embedded 3G and 500MB data.

The data alone is R9,000.00 and the netbook itself is R8,000.00 cash.

The R3k model is the old A110 while VC gives you the ZG5 (besides the wireless adapter, no diff). I got the E272 modem as they where clearing them out - very happy with that.

The 250Mb data is enough for what I need it for.

At the time I got the netbook, December, it was cheaper to take on contract than to buy cash (they where about R4700 - R6000).

EDIT: As an after thought here, the time value of money purchaseing the netbook on credit vs VC contract it worked out cheaper for me. Also VC data contracts are not price fixed and will change as prices increase or decrease. So in a few months either the 250Mb will be cheaper, or I can upgrade to 1Gb for the same price :)

Got one :)

Actually didn't go for the Linux version like I wanted :

I'm not 100% sure of the model, but it's the Windows version with embedded 3G. It's R7999.00 cash but on the contract it's R380pm with 500MB - which is also more than enough for me.
