I'm looking at getting an Acer One, preferable the one with 3G - anyone care to share any sources? I'm looking for the best price - Incredible Corruption is R6,999

Forgot to add a funny story - went to Incredible Connection, saw the same Acer One 3G in two different places, one advertised for R6999 and one advertised for R7999, I asked them why the price was different , apparently because they ordered one lot when the exchange rate was bad - so - depending on where you are in the store when you buy, you could end up paying more for the same product elsewhere in the store.

Heck of a surcharge for 3g

Lol I'm capped. (They don't do local)

I just know I saved R700 when I bought an EEE from them and R500 an entry laptop..
But this was a month ago

Will external 3G modem (USB/Express card) work for you?

How much is a 3G modem?

You could get the EEE 904HD for R3521 (R4400+ everywhere else) from Rebeltech then add up the costs of a 3G modem.

Specs for 904HD:

Intel 900Mhz Celeron
1GB DDR2
80GB
8.9" 1024x600
Wi-Fi b/g, SD slot
0.3MP Camera and built in microphone
5 hours battery
XP Home

Even funnier is that a short while ago, someone started a thread complaining that the guys at Incredible DON'T do this... I prefer it the way xrapidx experienced.

The thread said that people at Incredible admitted that as the exchange rate worsened, their prices increased, regardless of whether stock was bought before the increase or not...

The wonderful thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from :)

Bear in mind that the Aspire One has an Intel Atom processor, at almost twice the clock frequency, a larger hard drive, etc etc...

Yep, he can even use his 3G phone as a modem.

But the Intel Celeron is far less powerful than Atom and I think it would do well in Linux system.

The Atom is only slightly faster than the Celeron. The benefit is purely in battery life.

The 1.6ghz Atom is only slightly faster than the 900Mhz Celeron?

I've 'only' got the 120gb hdd in my AAO and I havent figured out what to do with all that space yet . . .

Incredible uses a computer/barcode system to keep track of prices. Unless the two had different codes, the price will be the same at the till. It's possible they didn't have time to scratch the old price off the old stock, which is standard practise in that chain. They often make mistakes with weird numbers on the shelf, but these are all resolved at the till - especially at the Canal Walk branch..

I have actually scored some goodies with IC in JHB last year, got some stuff at half of the normal price. :D

Slightly o/t, but I tried getting my Huawei E220 to work with the AAO [after doing all the System Updates], and using the Huawei Mobile Partner version 11.200.02.00.03 [running in Linpus], but HMP kept saying that the E220 was connecting and then that it had disconnected again - repeatedly. After some Googling there was a suggestion that a firmware update to the E220 would solve the problem - info was sketchy and since I managed to buy myself probably the last [proper] E272 in the country at Makro as a Christmas present, I have not tried solving the E220 firmware issue.

As far as I understand it the price for non 3G is 5499-00, with 3G in R6999-00 if you want it in black. Any other colour add R1000-00 just for the colour difference.

A friend of mine bought one on Sat, very nice bit of kit.

They are a lot of fun. I'm about to try installing ubuntu on mine now - if it fails (again) I'll probably crack the case, install some more RAM and try XP.
