Acer One - cheapest Source?

Incredible uses a computer/barcode system to keep track of prices. Unless the two had different codes, the price will be the same at the till. It's possible they didn't have time to scratch the old price off the old stock, which is standard practise in that chain. They often make mistakes with weird numbers on the shelf, but these are all resolved at the till - especially at the Canal Walk branch..

Well - they lost the sale because of that - the fact that they've put them in two different places with two VERY different prices says enough to me. It wasn't the price on the box, it was one of those display boards with the specs.

I asked the guy what happens if I took the one from the expensive side, he said thats what I'd pay.

Heck of a surcharge for 3g

Yeh - thats why I'm looking elsewhere - I need 120GB+ though.

Will external 3G modem (USB/Express card) work for you?

I have one of the USB ones, but it currently sits with my main laptop - it'll irritate me swapping them the whole time.

Vodacom is still bindling these with a cheap as chips data contract - maybe go for that? That's how I got mine... The small screen is just starting to get to me after 3 months...

They are a lot of fun. I'm about to try installing ubuntu on mine now - if it fails (again) I'll probably crack the case, install some more RAM and try XP.

I installed Ubuntu server and then LXDE and she flies ... very very fast boot time. Gnome was too heavy for it. I did a network install and it works fine everytime.

Got mine through them and it is working out cheaper in the long run. Only need 250Mb as its emergency bandwidth. But I'm loving mine and learning not to work on my 19" Montor and my AA0 at the same time.

Best idea I can come up with for all the space on mine is as a temporary storage facility for my photos. Its too small for me to do any editing on and probably doesnt have the power for it anyway.

Wifi networking - in particular pppoe - was the stumbling block last time. Fortunately its not my main laptop so I'm in no hurry.

Slightly o/t, but I tried getting my Huawei E220 to work with the AAO [after doing all the System Updates], and using the Huawei Mobile Partner version 11.200.02.00.03 [running in Linpus], but HMP kept saying that the E220 was connecting and then that it had disconnected again - repeatedly. After some Googling there was a suggestion that a firmware update to the E220 would solve the problem - info was sketchy and since I managed to buy myself probably the last [proper] E272 in the country at Makro as a Christmas present, I have not tried solving the E220 firmware issue.

OT

I've tested many E220s with "problems" and I'm more than convinced its software. Under LINUX they run without fault, but they seem to give crap with Windows. I flashed my Dads one with the latest BIOS and FIRMWARE but no real improvements till we trashed his XP.

I also got a E272 instead of the crappy pendrive one on my contract. Very nice and I just hope the replacement model is just as good (Up for an upgrade in 6mths on a SMS contract).

Anyone have a link to the deal? Is it the one with 3G built in?

Thanks.

No link, catalogue special. Also not the embedded 3G. Embedded 3G would be nice but I'm happy with the external E272 Modem I got.

Do you know which one it is then? The 120GB?

I'll see if I can find it online at work :p

Just to confirm is the vodacom deal a 24 or 36 month contract? The catalogue says 36 months but somone in another thread said it was a 24 month contract.

36mths, on 24 you have to pay more in - you also need to ask for that.

BTW: Was at IC today (Somerset Mall) and major discrepancies in their pricing but it seems the correct price is R7K for AAO with 3G.

People actually buy these netbooks on three year contracts?

This seems like quite a good deal Comx-Computers

Not sure whether i should go for this or the Vodacom deal with the data..

Agree. I thought the shop HAD to state exactly how much you end up paying, but GAME had an ad out today with only 36 x R255, which is quite tricky for some to work out.

I would avoid a laptop contract. The new law coming in hopefully this year will ban LONG CONTRACTS, AFAIK.

R9180? Is that for the 3G one?

Had a 701 eeepc (E220 3G card worked in both Linux and Windows). Initially wanted to buy the Acer Aspire One, but after exhaustive research decided on the 900HA eeepc. Ordered this week from Have2Have -

http://www.have2have.co.za/product/ASUS-Eee-PC-900HA-89-Inch-Netbook-16-GHz-Intel-ATOM-N270-Proc/80892/

Main reasons -

1) better battery life
2) have experience with the 701, loved it except for screen - and gave no problems
3) easier to upgrade
4) terrible experience from laptopdirect.co.za where I wanted to order the AAO
