We are moving our users onto a new Active Directory DC, the domain is exactly the same as before - we want to re create all the accounts on the new server so that they can simply log on to their workstations and have all their personalised settings intact - in other words, XP (on their PCs) must not create a new profile folder.

I'm real tired, hope this makes sence...

The workstation will always make a local profile folder... Even if u use roaming profiles, the profile is copied to the local machine, and updated back to the server at logoff.

thanks chris, but we're not using roaming profiles. is it possible to just move a workstation to a new domain without adding it - if the new domain name were the same as the old one - by adding the computer account in active directory?

I don't think I quite follow you.

Why not do a dcpromo on the new DC while it's connected to the existing network? That way all user + computers accounts, OU's, GPO's etc will get copied to the new DC.

Then just do a demote on the old one and remove it from the network. If you try to do it any other way, the SID's are going to change and the PC's will create new profiles the 1st time the user logs in.

Why not just export the acc's with csvde and import the file on the new DC.

thewanted's suggestion is your safest route - granted it will take longer but there is less change of it failing.

yup agree with wanted, instant replication, what more do you want :)
